Description

From highly acclaimed, bestselling author Ava Reid comes a gothic horror retelling of The Juniper Tree, set in another time and place within the world of The Wolf and the Woodsman, where a young witch seeks to discover her identity and escape the domination of her abusive wizard father, perfect for fans of Shirley Jackson and Catherynne M. Valente.

A gruesome curse. A city in upheaval. A monster with unquenchable appetites.

Marlinchen and her two sisters live with their wizard father in a city shifting from magic to industry. As Oblya’s last true witches, she and her sisters are little more than a tourist trap as they treat their clients with archaic remedies and beguile them with nostalgic charm. Marlinchen spends her days divining secrets in exchange for rubles and trying to placate her tyrannical, xenophobic father, who keeps his daughters sequestered from the outside world. But at night, Marlinchen and her sisters sneak out to enjoy the city’s amenities and revel in its thrills, particularly the recently established ballet theater, where Marlinchen meets a dancer who quickly captures her heart.

As Marlinchen’s late-night trysts grow more fervent and frequent, so does the threat of her father’s rage and magic. And while Oblya flourishes with culture and bustles with enterprise, a monster lurks in its midst, borne of intolerance and resentment and suffused with old-world power. Caught between history and progress and blood and desire, Marlinchen must draw upon her own magic to keep her city safe and find her place within it.

A hauntingly beautiful folktale. If you like the brothers grimm this is the story for you.

*Trigger Warning for this book - eating disorder (bulimia), self harm thoughts, sexual assault* There is no trigger warning in the book description, but there should be.

Besides that, I absolutely loved this book. Even more than her previous book the Wolf and the Woodsman. While her previous book was great, this folktale was just the perfect match for Reid’s poetic and lyrical writing style. It made the gruesome and dark haunting and sometimes even achingly beautiful. I felt like I was reading a brother’s grim story in the best way. Great book, just be mindful of triggers!

Beautiful

I hesitated at first because it's not really my type of story usually but it's so beautifully written and narrated. I have no regret at all. It's a dark fantasy with a romance subplot that's very reminiscent of Slav folktales. I loved it and it's probably going to be in my top ten this year.

Juniper Tree Inspired, but not a retelling

Don’t go in thinking this story will follow the story arc of The Juniper Tree, because it doesn’t. I kept looking for parallels that didn’t exist, and missed a lot of other things in the process.

And still, I predicted the twist around 10% in.

I didn’t care about any of the characters, and by the end I just wanted it to be over. Beautifully written, but so incredibly dreary and filled with trauma and despair that the body horror didn’t feel horrific.

There was no fairy tale whimsy to make the horror feel shocking. It was more like: well yeah, of course that happened. Nothing is good, everything is bad. End of story.
