The idea of a novel where the characters refuse to follow the authours Romance Novel Tropes got me to pick this up. Once the idea had played out for maybe the first 40 minutes I was increasingly concerned that this was a cool concept but not enough to carry a whole novel on and was considering putting this down.

Glad I stuck with it as this eventually turns into a rip roaring adventure that really embraces its 4th wall breaking meta. By the end of it I might have been even more invested in the fictional authours story then the fantasy protagonists story.

So yeah it takes a bit to build up to the good stuff in this novel but it really delivers once you get on more toward the second half of the novel.

this has to be one of my favourite books to listen to, I have listened to the audiobook multiple times so far.

I first heard of this story as the author's clips on Youtube, but I enjoyed them so much that I opted to listen to the full version.
Having enjoyed it so much, I've also gifted a paperback copy to a friend that I know enjoys romantasy. Yes, I enjoyed it so much that I bought it twice.

Romantasy as a genre is at once exercised and satirized here as the characters voice practical concerns and impose agency over their own lives while arguing with their enthusiastic, 'its-a-trope-because-it-works', author. This push and pull is less antagonistic than it is a gentle tension that ultimately brings everyone to a happier ending.

Whether you enjoy romantasy or think it's silly, this book is a great choice.
If you fell both of those things at once, then it is not to be missed!

I'm so excited this out on audiobook. I follow the author on tiktok and was watching her videos before the book was being written. Definitely worth watching if you like this book.

I love that it's about an author fighting to get her characters to do what she wants them to when she wrote them to be fully fleshed out people and they just won't follow the tropes!

As someone who sometimes writes things, and oftentimes gets stuck on writing things, this was deeply relatable in parts. I loved the back and forth between characters and author, and the very real moments of frustration. I loved how real the FMC (story in the story) felt, and how she pushed back against the author when she'd try to make things happen that were contrary to who she was. I did like the blatant parallels between the character of the author and the character of her FMC, and how in her fights with her characters, she had to confront things in her own life and eventually be brave herself too. This was the best of both worlds (extremely trope-y and against trope).

I am just going to pretend the epilogue didn't happen though. I am a card carrying, dues paying member of the union against pregnancy tropes.
