Description

Few actors in Hindi cinema have had Rishi Kapoor's sort of a career arc: from the gawky adolescent pining for his schoolteacher (Mera Naam Joker, 1970) to the naughty 90-year-old (Kapoor & Sons, 2016), Rishi Kapoor has regaled audiences for close to 50 years. He won a National Award for his debut, became an overnight sensation with his first film as a leading man (Bobby, 1973), and carved a niche for himself with a string of romantic musical blockbusters in an era known for its angst-ridden films. He was the youth icon that is still the toast of the satellite TV circuit. The songs he lip-synced are the bread and butter of all radio stations even today. Then there was the second coming after a brief hiatus in the 1990s - as one of the finest actors in mainstream Hindi cinema with powerhouse performances in films like Do Dooni Chaar, D-Day, Agneepath and others.

Characteristically candid, Rishi Kapoor brings Punjabi brio to the writing of Khullam Khulla. This is as up close and personal a biography as any fan could have hoped for. He writes about growing up in the shadow of a legendary father, skipping school to act in Mera Naam Joker, the workings of the musical hits of the era, an encounter with Dawood Ibrahim, his heroines (their working relationship, the gossip and the frisson that was sometimes real), his approach to his craft, his tryst with clinical depression, and more.

A foreword by Ranbir Kapoor and a stirring afterword by Neetu Singh bookend the warmest, most dil se biography an Indian star has ever penned.

Khullam Khulla - best audible experience till date

This is a great book written by Rishi Kapoor and Meena Iyer. Audible presentation has been great. I would recommend a concluding part to be included and perhaps written by Neetu/Ranbir/Ridhima (Kapoor) - either of them- in consultation with Meena Iyer.

The title Khullam Khulla suggests- being frank and the title justifies the book.......So for a change......one can safely “judge the book by its cover”. The confession I like the most was when Rishi Kapoor mentions that he bought an award that was to be won by Amitabh Bachchan. What a confession it was because “Bobby” was great though by no means it was above “Zanjeer”.

I though the book painted a picture of the history of Bollywood from 1969 to the present and in fact Rishi Kapoor skillfully provided the glimpses of the two generations prior to that.....

And I do agree with Rishi Kapoor’s ambition that he deserves the “Dada Saheb Pkalke Award”. The award must be conferred to him posthumously as was done in case of Sashi Kapoor.

Salim Sheriff’s narration was good as his voice resembled Rishi Kapoor though a number of times he pronounced the word “film” that seemed out of chord. The editor should have corrected it.

Overall this is a great presentation. I enjoyed the last chapter - the perspective from Neetu Singh-Kapoor the most.........Thank you audible.

Awful narration

Good book with a very bad narration. Very poor and wrong pronunciation of Hindi words. Lots of patchwork.
