À propos de cet audio

Profoundly honest and moving, Kihiani is the uplifting story of an Inuk artist’s journey to healing and self-discovery

Born in Fort Churchill, Manitoba, but raised in Arviat, a predominantly Inuit community on the western edges of Hudson Bay, Susan and her six siblings grew up in a humble but loving home. But while living in Rankin Inlet, when she was eight years old, Susan’s life was disrupted by a life-changing event, a distinct separation that created a schism inside her for many years and from which she continues to heal.

At fifteen, she started writing poems that spilled out of her, and when Susan had the choice to leave her community, she grabbed it like a lifeline. Eventually, Susan was approached by a producer at CBC who was making a compilation album of Arctic artists and years later signed with a major label for her third album, This Child.

The disruption and milestones, the turmoil and joy, the devastation and healing—this is Susan Aglukark’s story of discovering her Inuk self.

As a sexual assault survivor who is reinventing himself at 43, this book arrived at exactly the right time for me. Even though Susan and I are on different paths, so much of her story resonated deeply. I grew up as the son of a pastor, spent years in ministry, travelled the world as a missionary, and now work as a professional photographer. Hearing her speak openly about her insecurities, moments of doubt, and the successes she has earned through it all truly struck me.

I have already reached out to her and hope we can connect soon. Whether it is on my podcast, The Viewfinder Sessions, where we talk about creative outlets, photography, mental health and more, or through my work in the Arctic, I think we could create something meaningful together.

I am also walking my own path of reconciliation, learning, growing and working with Indigenous-led initiatives and businesses. I feel hopeful for what the future holds. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your story and for being vulnerable in such an honest and powerful way. I appreciate you more than you know.
