Description

Homicide detective Levi Abrams is barely holding his life together. He’s reeling from the fallout of a fatal shooting, and his relationship with his boyfriend is crumbling. The last thing he’s prepared for is a serial killer stalking the streets of Las Vegas. Or how he keeps getting thrown into the path of annoyingly charming bounty hunter Dominic Russo.

Dominic likes his life free of complications. That means no tangling with cops—especially prickly, uptight detectives. But when he stumbles across one of the Seven of Spades’s horrifying crime scenes, he can’t let go, despite Levi’s warnings to stay away.

The Seven of Spades is ruthless and always two moves ahead. Worst of all, they’ve taken a dangerously personal interest in Levi and Dominic. Forced to trust each other, the two men race to discover the killer’s identity, revealing hidden truths along the way and sparking a bond neither man expected. But that may not be enough to protect them.

This killer likes to play games, and the deck is not stacked in Levi and Dominic’s favor.

Soooooo Gooood!!!!

I binged listened to this series, could not stop it was so good. I almost didn't give it a go as many had bad things to say about the narration. I'm glad it didn't stop me. I enjoyed the narration and the suspense of the story.

riveting! sexy! mysterious!

I couldn't put it down! i loved the characters. the realism of their personal problems and reactions to situations felt like they were people I could meet in real life. The sexual tension between the characters was palpable and I was very invested in their relationship. The ending of the book made me immediately start the next one.

Needs a better narrator

the story is good and I like the characters but the narration is very stiff there is no difference to the emotions of happy, angry, or sad. where a character is joking or flirting or shouting there is no way to tell by the narrator. It makes listening to the story annoying.

Good story line

Good narration and story line but the narrator mispronounced multiple words - most specifically words related to the Jewish faith (e.g., “Gentile” which he pronounced as “genteel”) and Israel (e.g., Krav Maga) but others as well (e.g., medical terms like “carotid” and “anesthetize”) - it was distracting but overall he did a great job!

Good story, unsatisfying narration

I tend to prefer a less dramatic narration, but this was way too monotone for me. Intense scenes were read like the weatherman talking about how it was going to be another cloudy day, and dialogue had absolutely no emotion to it. I mean that literally: there were multiple moments where someone was said to be hyperventilating or sobbing, meanwhile the dialogue made it sound like this traumatic event was just another day. It was disappointing, especially as some moments showed a lot of promise: Levi's voice, for example, seemed true to his character, and gave him plenty of personality. I'm sure the narrator can give a great performance, but this wasn't quite it.

I'd heard a ton of great things about this story before finally getting around to reading it, and it didn't let down. Kingsbridge is a great writer; the characters are all developed and interesting, the pace keeps a good balance between character/relationship development and action, and there was a good show of diversity. The story only lost one star because it didn't necessarily 'wow' me. It was a dependable story, and I enjoyed it, but it didn't quite do anything to particularly stand out to me. I also hoped for more interactions between Dominic and Levi, but I'm certain that will come in later books.
