Histoire
The ascension of Vladimir Putin - a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB - to the presidency of Russia in 1999 should have been a signal that the country was headed away from democracy. Yet in the intervening years - as America and the world's other leading powers have continued to appease him - Putin has grown into not only a dictator but a global threat. With his vast resources and nuclear weapons, Putin is at the center of a worldwide assault on political liberty.

The Russo-Ukrainian War is the most serious geopolitical crisis since the Second World War—and yet at the heart of the conflict is a mystery. Vladimir Putin lurched from a calculating, subtle master of opportunity to a reckless gambler, putting his regime—and Russia itself—at risk of destruction. Why? Drawing on over 25 years’ experience working in Moscow, journalist Owen Matthews provides the answer. He takes us inside the COVID bubble where Putin conceived his invasion plans in a fog of nationalist fantasy and bad information.

Histoire
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

In Putin’s People, the investigative journalist and former Moscow correspondent Catherine Belton reveals the untold story of how Vladimir Putin and the small group of KGB men surrounding him rose to power and looted their country. Delving deep into the workings of Putin’s Kremlin, Belton accesses key inside players to reveal how Putin replaced the freewheeling tycoons of the Yeltsin era with a new generation of loyal oligarchs, who in turn subverted Russia’s economy and legal system and extended the Kremlin's reach into the United States and Europe.

Histoire
In a damning, inspiring, and breathtaking narrative of what is likely to be a turning point for Europe—and the world—Guardian correspondent and New York Times bestselling author Luke Harding reports firsthand on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When, just before dawn on February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin launched a series of brutal attacks, Harding was there, on the ground in Kyiv. But this senseless violence was met with astounding resilience—from, among others, the country’s embattled president—and the courage of a people prepared to risk everything to preserve their nation’s freedom.

By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates—men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

Description
Brought to you by Penguin.
A gripping and explosive account of Vladimir Putin's tyranny, charting his rise from spy to tsar, exposing the events that led to his invasion of Ukraine and his assault on Europe.
In Killer in the Kremlin, award-winning journalist John Sweeney takes listeners from the heart of Putin's Russia to the killing fields of Chechnya, to the embattled cities of an invaded Ukraine.
In a disturbing exposé of Putin's sinister ambition, Sweeney draws on thirty years of his own reporting—from the Moscow apartment bombings to the atrocities committed by the Russian Army in Chechnya, to the annexation of Crimea and a confrontation with Putin over the shooting down of flight MH17—to understand the true extent of Putin's long war.
Drawing on eyewitness accounts and compelling testimony from those who have suffered at Putin's hand, we see the heroism of the Russian opposition, the bravery of the Ukrainian resistance, and the brutality with which the Kremlin responds to such acts of defiance, assassinating or locking away its critics, and stopping at nothing to achieve its imperialist aims.
In the midst of one of the darkest acts of aggression in modern history—Russia's invasion of Ukraine—this book shines a light on Putin's rule and poses urgent questions about how the world must respond.

A profound analysis of the "Tsar of the zombies"
Sweeney takes us into a deep and often personal description from Putin's birth to the time of writing of this book. The author has been on the wannabe Tsar's case for over twenty years. Has interviewed him...and survived to tell the tale. Many weren't that lucky as you will learn among many, many other things. This very well researched book is worth every penny. It's an honor John to be one of your patreon supporters.

Putin - The Rat Tsar. Truly compelling insight!
Captivating... heartbreaking - 1st person, on-the-ground account of the destruction and devastation in the first months of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
A truly compelling and uniquely insightful look into the truly heinous and soulless nature of a man history will surely remember as the Rat Tsar.
Highly recommended - even for those poor souls with their heads so profoundly lodged in Putin's figurative colon they no longer see the light of day. May this read be the metaphorical vitamin D you sorely lack. Cheers.

A background of Putin everyone should listen to
This book explains Putin in detail and explains why we are where we are with Russia and Ukraine today.
Putin is without question a war criminal. His depravity equals the worst of history. Stalin, Hitler, Tojo, Saddam Hussain, Kabuga and many others.
The story is told so well. Easy to listen to and John's way of reading his book is very engaging. He draws you in, no matter how nasty the tale.
The book not only is a detailed account of Putin's climb to power, his crimes to get there and his he governs but also an indictment of Western politicians. They ignored the facts in front of them. They knew and did nothing when they could have.
A must read.

Speculative and Shoddy
despite being a journalist, Sweeney prensents much speculative info as fact. it's a good story but much of it remains unproven. i would not recommend.
