À propos de cet audio

The first science-fiction written by a Black woman, Kindred has become a cornerstone of African-American literature. This combination of slave memoir, fantasy, and historical fiction is a novel of rich literary complexity.

Having just celebrated her 26th birthday in 1976 California, Dana, an African-American woman, is suddenly and inexplicably wrenched through time into antebellum Maryland. After saving a drowning White boy there, she finds herself staring into the barrel of a shotgun and is transported back to the present just in time to save her life.

During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes the challenge she's been given: to protect this young slaveholder until he can father her own great-grandmother.

Author Octavia E. Butler skilfully juxtaposes the serious issues of slavery, human rights, and racial prejudice with an exciting science-fiction, romance, and historical adventure. Kim Staunton's narrative talent magically transforms the listener's earphones into an audio time machine.

The narrator did a perfect job . Fascinating story. Past and present woven together. Dana ( and eventually Kevin) travelling to the past and experiencing first hand early 19th century Maryland. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Important historical fiction

I can’t review much without potentially spoiling it for others.
All I will say is that the narrator did an incredible performance and though this is a fiction novel that only grazes the surface of the true depth of horror Black people experienced under slavery, it did a great job at bringing you into that lesser known grey area that existed between “slave” and “owner”. It does a great job at really humanizing those who existed in such an awful time to those of us who have only ever known them as a picture or vague story in a very white washed history book.
Loved this! Wish I could read it again for the first time!

Performance was perfect for the story

A different approach to the topic of slavery and race relations in the US. Top marks for creativity/story line and the narrator was excellent. What would it be like if you were African American in the modern world and you had the chance to go back in time to confront your white, slave owner, great great grandfather on his plantation.

Creative

The premise is original and gripping, and i enjoyed the main character's strength and resourcefulness. The historical account of the south during slavery is tough to listen to, and makes you think which is a strength. I enjoyed the read and all the characters were complex. Definitely one of a kind and totally worth a read! If you like time travel, you will like it!
