Description

Doctor Isla Cooper is cursed. Literally. Each night, at the stroke of midnight she falls into a deep sleep from which she cannot be awakened for six hours. To make it worse, the curse has an expiration date - after a year, she will fall asleep forever. And the year is almost up.

In a desperate attempt to find Malette - the witch who cursed her - Isla blackmails her way onto Daniel Pickett's private airship bound for the Caribbean, only to discover she's traveling with three illegal shapeshifters and the despicable Nigel Crowe, a government official determined to hunt down and exterminate every shapeshifter in England. Isla and Daniel must work together to keep the identities of the shapeshifters hidden while coming to terms with their own hidden secrets and their blossoming attraction to each other.

Filled with suspense, intrigue, and plenty of romance, Kiss of the Spindle is a steampunk Sleeping Beauty story. It is a race against the clock as Isla and Daniel try to hunt down the elusive Malette before Isla's deathlike sleep becomes permanent.

Just as amazing as the first one!

I fell in love with Beauty and The Clockwork Beast and I have been awaiting the release of this book very impatiently! I was not disappointed! The original narrator is back and did amazing like last time, and the story is so good! It is equal to the first book in every way and I love it just as much! This is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite book series! Nancy Campbell Allen is immensely talented and brings new life to traditional stories! The books both stand alone and compliment each other in the most perfect way! Can't wait to see what's coming next!!!

The best!

The best of Ms Allen’s work. I love this story. Adventure, heroine, hero rescue and romance. However what makes it the best is that it’s clean.
Thank you for a great adventure and an inability to put the story down.

Clever Retelling

This was another fabulous steampunk re-imagining of a fairy-tale.
What I enjoyed;
-It's so different, you don't feel bored. Yet it follows enough of the story that it relates.
-The steampunk setting. It's hard to find well done steampunk, and this is perfect. It's a fun escape.
-The sweet romance. I appreciate that there's no sex or swearing. But that doesn't mean it's just for children. I'm 28 and enjoyed this book.
-It's as good as her other books in the series. Sometimes authors can't recreate the magic with sequels, but this was well written.
-I like that characters from her first book are referenced so you have an update in their lives.

I would recommend listening to the series in order, but it's also a great stand alone. This is the best version of Sleepy Beauty I've encountered, and one of the best steampunk novels I've read.

Second favorite in the series...

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous one in the series, but it was still enjoyable. The narrator took a little getting used to and wasn't as good at giving different characters unique voices as others I've listened to. The storyline was a bit convoluted and forced clumsily into the Sleeping Beauty narrative. I did enjoy the characters and the expansion of the steampunk world.

Steampunk Retelling of Sleeping Beauty

This book was,of course wildly different from the fairy tale, with steampunk elements and no royalty., but with the common sleep curse. Flying airships, as in boats, shape shifters and our sleep cursed heroine being an empath who tries to help the shape shifters while trying to search for a cure for herself before she sleeps forever are all a lot of fun. I think my favorite from this author is still Beauty and the Clockwork Beast – – though I will read anything she writes!

Great fun and well done!

Series Info/Source: This is the 2nd book in the Proper Steampunk Romance series. I borrowed this from Audible Escapes with my Audible membership.

Audiobook Quality (5/5): This audiobook is really well done and a joy to listen to.

Story (4/5): I enjoyed this Sleeping Beauty retelling a lot. The story is engaging and has a good balance of action, adventure, intrigue, and romance. It’s fast-paced and fun to listen to. This is only loosely based on Sleeping Beauty but I enjoyed the parallels to that fairy tale.

Characters (5/5): The characters were definitely the highlight of this story. I loved Dr. Isla Cooper and her ability to fight her own battles...literally. Daniel Pickett was great fun as well.

Setting (4/5): I really enjoyed the steampunk setting and the journey from England to the Carribean. There aren’t a ton of unique steampunk elements in here and the world-building is a bit sparse, but it’s still a fun setting.

Writing Style (4/5): This is very well written and the writing flows well. The viewpoints switch between Cooper and Pickett and this works very well for the story. No complaints about the writing style.

Summary (4/5): Overall this was another fun and highly entertaining steampunk romance novel. These have been just pure fun to read. I enjoy the characters, the action, adventure, and the romance. I especially love the fact that these are well done steampunk fairy tale retellings (two of my favorite genres mashed up). I definitely plan on continuing the series.

A fun retelling, but the executions is lacking.

This series is putting wonderfully fun spins on the ubiquitous tales, which I find very entertaining. Therefore, despite my misgivings about the first one, I decided to give the second one a chance and hope for better. I come away from it with mixed feelings. In some respects it is better, but at the same time most of the faults of the first book are still here and some of them have even gotten worse.

The world building is still uneven - the first book helps establish some realities, but this one introduces more phenomena and no clarity as to how the characters perceive these magical events within that reality and why. E.g. witches are common place, shape shifters of all kinds are common place - enough for some governments to regulate the shape shifters, but, apparently, not witches, who openly trade in life-threatening curses without repercussions... Shape shifters hide the shifting and are feared and heavily stigmatized. Witches are well known, in the open and not even feared, apparently, despite their seemingly limitless powers. What sort of society is this and how did it come to its current understanding? Same thing happens with social standards and propriety - based on the descriptions in the book, it's nearly impossible to adequately infer the accepted social norms and how far the characters are straying from them in their behavior - especially since some of the behaviors shown in this book seem way too improper compared to what was considered too forward in the first book. Inconsistencies like these are rampant and severely undermined my belief in this imagined reality.

But the writing is still very pleasant, the characters likable, albeit a bit flat, and the story fast paced enough to be entertaining. The most frustrating part for me about this series thus far is how close it comes to being good without quite clearing that threshold... A little more thought for the world-building, a little more depth for the characters, a little less heavy-handiness in manufacturing romantic encounters and situations, a little more subtlety and consistency overall - and this book could have been something fully enjoyable, but as it stands, it, unfortunately, is not... Now I'm not sure I have the patience to keep giving this series more chances to get there.

The performance: I had low expectations for this performance based on the sample and was somewhat dreading it, but on 1.5x speed, it was quite good. That was a happy surprise.
