I don't even know where to begin. There is something so well developed about this book, so satisfying that when you finish it, you wish there was more. I remember the first time I read this book as a teen and my feelings have not changed. Kel is so unique as a character who has to operate in a world that is dominated by magic when she herself has none. And as a woman in a place of authority opperting in a male dominated profession.And yet she never lets the odds that are stacked against her get in the way of doing what is right, but also doing what others might deem too hard. Her determination and good heart make her such a compelling character, as does the loyalty she inspires from pretty much everyone who really gets to know her. This book is full of adventure, high moral stakes, beautiful friendships and I think really stands as a defining moment in the Tortall Universe Tamora Pierce has created. And FINALLY, I can say that after 4 books, the narrator seems to have hit the right note in terms of voices, tone and pacing.

when the narrator pronounced the word 'bayd' incorrectly it just sent me down a little spiral but it's so good anyways pls listen
