As a proselytizer in Shanghai, using fake names and secret codes to evade the authorities' notice, Scorah discreetly looked for targets in public parks and stores. To support herself, she found work at a Chinese language learning podcast, hiding her real purpose from her coworkers. Now with a creative outlet, getting to know worldly people for the first time, she began to understand that there were other ways of seeing the world and living a fulfilling life. Loved it. Beautiful ending to a difficult journey of exiting the jehovah's witnesses. It highlights the sad truth of manipulation and endoctrination that so many others are unable to deprogram.

Stayed up way later that I should have because I just couldn't stop listening.

There's so much to the story. A glimpse into the thought processes of someone who grows up in a closed belief system, the internal war that takes place once the belief system starts to crumble, the aftermath after the complete collapse, and the process of rebuilding something completely new. Captivating descriptions of life in Shanghai. Fascinating experiences as a missionary in China. Inspiring courage and resilience.

Everyone needs to read this book. The author takes you on a journey through her life and lays herself bare to the reader so that you can see that there are people who live lives you cannot imagine. These people come out the other side changed and stronger. By hearing her experience you will understand the mind of the Jehovah’s Witness you see on the street corner and know the inner struggles they may be dealing with.
