Description

2018 Dragon Award Finalist for Best Military Sci-Fi Novel

In the era of the original Four Horsemen, there comes a Legend.

At a time when Humans were just starting to venture forth into the Galactic Union as mercenaries, Martin Quincy survived long enough to do something no one else had - he retired.

There was only one problem: He got bored.

After battling aliens for many years - killing aliens and getting paid - retirement didn’t suit him, and he decided to strap on the combat armor and go back to the stars. Along with his old friend Kal, Martin joined Cartwright’s Cavaliers, humanity’s best merc company. Life was exciting!

But he got bored. Again.

What does a "legend" do when even the merc life gets boring? He starts his own company! Can Martin form a merc company out of non-merc races and stand up for the downtrodden of the galaxy, or has his long string of good luck finally run out? One thing is for sure - with Torvasi and Andori troopers, and a Sirra’Kan princess as his partner, he won’t get bored again!

Includes Shattered Crucible, a bonus novella in The Four Horsemen series.

Great book, sad Marc Vietor does't narrate other

Great book but if you listen to the free sample - for book 2 and it is CAPITAL BAD.

I would have gladly bought the entire series otherwise.

The story covers multiple years and only brief points however the author keeps it interesting.

Fun story

This is a fun story, yeah the main character seems to have a horseshoe up his … but it’s a better read than those with unneeded drama.

Great Four Horsemen Universe Introduction

I had no idea that this fan-conceived SYFY reality existed until I stumbled on it via Audible's 'Recommended' algorithm.. but there are dozens of books based on this multi-species interstellar paradigm. Most of the thousands of intelligent lifeforms in the Galactic Union are entirely peaceful - but 37 species are "Merc-races" - comfortable developing & using death-dealing hardware and tactics. In this imagining of a universe teeming with extraterrestrial life, humans are particularly violent.. relatively physically weak but renowned for their ability to kill with no qualms and extreme prejudice. The scenario provides a platform for writers looking to provide straightforward adrenaline-fuelled space-marine combat for readers so inclined.

This Christopher Woods offering builds on the FHU reality with an oddly charming installment: 'Legend' follows the adventures of Martin Quincy - sentenced to 10 years of Military Service after a youthful crime back on Earth - and then proceeding into a career travelling the universe as a gun-for-hire.. building a largely unwanted "legendary" reputation.. and then forming a unique multi-species team of fighters filling *ethical* contracts (his teams won't do anything perceived as immoral - assassinations, for example).
The book is strikingly sophomoric (much more immature than most of the SciFi I read), but playful character interactions make up for the lack of any unifying plot, stilted expletive-laden and cartoonish dialogue, and total absence of anything worth contemplating. The conflicts are resolved more with bravado than combat, but if you lower your standards, you should enjoy this brain candy.

Marc Vietor does an impressive job translating the often silly script into a consumable audiobook. His tongue-in-cheek delivery matches the author's banter-filled text perfectly.. and the diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are of Vietor's characteristic excellent quality.
Unfortunately, many of the chosen alien dialects are over-the-top growly, whiny, or melodramatic. I appreciate Mr. Vietor's creativity, but this is one of his weaker performances.

Altogether, the audiobook merits 5.5 stars out of 10. If you can set aside expectations, it's a fun distraction - ideal for a long drive or a boring night shift.
The Four Horsemen Universe feels like a bunch of ComicCon fanboys put together a world to unify their RPG gaming nights.. but it's undoubtedly potentially entertaining - and this installment sets the table nicely. This book within that matrix is worth a download if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection.. but spending a Credit would require careful consideration - better options absolutely beckon.

[Incidentally: The interspecies sexual activity - while limited to innuendo - is frankly "hentai" weird]

BONUS: The recording includes a novella explaining how the first human military forays into the Galaxy were met with disaster - except for four units with (coincidentally) equine battle standards.. thus.. "The Four Horsemen"
