Description

New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Garber’s limitless imagination takes flight once more in the colorful, mesmerizing, and immersive sequel to the best-selling breakout audiobook debut Caraval

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister, Scarlett, from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more - and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets...including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about - maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.

beautiful yet predictable

Beautiful descriptions, interesting characters, a good narrator. but an incredibly predictable story. made it quite boring after a while. no real climax that excited me because I knew what was going to happen.

Legendary

Caraval was the first audiobook I purchased. I loved it! It was sooo long ago tho that I was completely blindsided when I saw Legendary in the browse list. I immediately bought it nd delved right in.

This story revolves around Tella nd her "relationship" with Legend nd other players. The story picks up just after the party at the end of Caraval. Tella is determined to find her mother at any cost. The world is almost as breathtaking (in my mind) as it's predecessor, but I found myself being more captivated by the characters in this book.

As with Caraval, we are left open ended nd slightly unsatisfied, so once again, I sit nd wait, in anticipation, for the next installment. I almost don't want this to ever end. What a journey these books have been!

Like A Painting, But For Your Ears

I am really, really enjoying this series and can't wait for the last book! Stephanie Garber describes Tella and Scarlett's world so beautifully, and listening to these books is like a mini escape to a world full of parties, magic, and beautiful dresses. There were enough twists and turns to keep the plot moving along nicely, and Rebecca Soler's narration is excellent.
This series reminds me a lot of The Night Circus in the best possible way, so if you enjoyed the Night Circus (and enjoy YA fiction), you may enjoy Legendary.

not terrible.

A decent follow up story. A bit too similar to the first but this was told from a Donatella point of view.

Great second story in series, but repetitive

We listened to this while driving across country. Great book to get us across Ontario. We were excited when it came out. As we loved Caraval. Both books are wonderfully descriptive. However, when listening to it consistently all the way through, it felt as if there was A LOT of recap...constantly. This got annoying. Very, very annoying. We didn’t remember this in the first novel, however we listened to that on multiple drives which were spread apart. Not so this time. Therefore 4 stars over 5.

We’ll still listen to the 3rd story.

Hard to finish

I loved Caraval and was very excited to start on Legendary. I started to get bored about half way through. I kept on and made my way to the end... Not saying I was disappointed but the story felt a bit flat.

painfully long and boring

Too much talk not enough action. I gave up around chapter 14 skipped to the last few to confirm I had figured out the plot. This book was torture and felt like a filler book dragged out to sell and make you buy a 3rd book to see what happens. I hate that kind of waste of my time and money. probably skipping the last book. I liked the first book but this gave me headache.

Disappointing

The metaphors were more magical than the book itself. What is the purpose of these games? The whole game doesn't seem like a magical caravel. Mostly describes damsels In distress and fancy dresses.

Not as good as the first, narration a little tricky at times

I jumped right into this book after finishing the first in the series - Caraval. I wanted to like it so much but this one just fell short for me in so many ways.

The biggest issue I had with it is that it is told from the perspective of Tella, not Scarlet. I see that the author was trying to expand the story but for me, Tella is such an unlikable character that I did not enjoy it as much and I found myself wanting to know what Scarlet was doing throughout. Tella is immature, impulsive and selfish. Because of these traits possibly, I found the writing in this one to feel a little mor juvenile and immature. While the first felt like good fiction in the YA genre, this one was much more young and felt not as well written.

With the addition of another male major character, and their interactions with each other being more common than in the last, it sometimes got confusing to keep them all separate. Dante, Julian, and now Jax and Legend all got to be a little humbled to me sometimes.

I read this book on Audible, and while I think the narrator did a decent job of the rest of the story-telling, I
thought her take on the voices for all these male characters was a challenge to differentiate. I think she could have benefitted from some additional reading cast members to narrate some of the male character voices.

I did, however, love the imagery of the carriages and the descriptions of the temples and the city.

It is fast-paced and a quick read. It was easy to listen to while driving or doing chores. Even though it was not as good as the first, I will still read Finale to get the conclusion to the story.

Just like a movie

I will start off by saying the narrator is amazing! The story itself seemed a carbon copy of the original book. It was quite predictable and did not hold the same magic and mystique of the original. This seems like a forced attempt at a sequel.

The Most Annoying Sisters You'll Ever Read About

I was expecting a lot & was sadly disappointed. I found Scarlett to be whiny in the extreme. Don't get me started on Nutty Tella. Beyond exasperating. And if Scarlett screamed, TELLA! one more time I was going to scream. The characters were caricatures. If you're looking for strong female leads, keep moving. The two sisters are idiots. I got this on sale at Christmas. I see the second book is out. I'm willing to see where it goes & hope it improves. Overall, I didn't find it very original.

Kind of A Let Down

I loved the first book! I know people had a problem with Scarlett, but I really liked her! So, when I heard we’d get a book about Tella, I was so excited! But it turns out I don’t like Tella very much. Even Scarlett was out of character. The reveal of Legend was so not good! The only thing I liked was Caraval and the Fates. I will read the next book, not with excited anymore.

not as good as the first one

it was a good finish to the story, however I think some of the newness and Intrigue was lost because I already knew the story and the players in it.

Not as good as the first

Honestly I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first. I wasn’t a huge fan of Tella in the first book so having this be entirely in her POV was a bit annoying. The over the top metaphors and near constant sexual/romantic tension got old quick. I enjoyed learning about the Fates though. A few plot points were easy to figure out like the last book. Parts of the book seemed repetitive as well. The ending is clearly set up for another book...I hope this time we get some of Legend’s POV, he is the most interesting character in the series.

The performance was quite good as well, although not spectacular.
