Description

On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. Bad narration

YOU NEED A BETTER NARRATOR! He can't pronounce words and terms correctly, he needs to do some vocabulary research first 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

meh

the author obviously loves Verne...that why he steals so much from him. some clever bits are overwhelmed by bad and lazy writing. seeing how many books are out I'm figuring a lack of care in how the story is convinced. not buying the sequel.

Fun Creature-Feature Adventure!

I love Beck's stories, and this is a fun installment in his creature books. It reminds me a bit of his "Center Of The Earth" series, and there is definitely crossover in the themes. There is some crossover in the capabilities of the monsters too, but I can't say much more about that without venturing into spoiler territory. I agree with some of the reviews that Troy is pretty feeble as a spy character-- that whole angle feels like a missed opportunity. The villains in this one are frightening and manipulative, but mostly two-dimensional though. Still, their motivation drives the story into very uncomfortable places and keeps the stakes extra-high. There is also a massive and surprising twist at the very end I didn't see coming. The narrator, Sean Mangan, is excellent as always, though I sometimes find his pronunciation of words and his diction a bit strange. Example: Instead of "skel-e-tal," he says "skel-EEE-tal," which is odd, but that's how he rolls! Still, he's perfect for this story, and I've come to associate his soothing voice with Beck's writing. If Beck were ever to choose another narrator, it would just be weird at this point.

In general, the characters aren't the most developed, yet despite that, this book is a fun adventure of exposition and history. In other words, it's an entertaining listen that lacks meaningful substance. Lest this sound like a back-handed compliment, let me reiterate I did enjoy this book very much. Compared to other books from this author though, I don't see myself going back for seconds. "Fathomless," and its sequel, "Abyss," are so powerful that I've listened to each at least six times, and will probably do so again. Those books are fantastic, rich with intrigue, and outstanding character development. This one doesn't have that same attention to character at all. Still, it's a wild enough adventure to which I couldn't stop listening, if only to find out what happened next. The monsters are terrifying, the premise is outstanding, and I love historically-based adventures. I love creature features even more.

One thing that keeps the story moving (and this doesn't always work in books) is a past-present device where the story goes back in time a thousand years, foreshadowing events to come, then returns to present-day. Beck does this sometimes in his other stories too. There is also the noted influence of Jules Verne, as in the "Center Of The Earth" series, which is a fun callback to those books. "Lemuria" also leaves us with an unexpected cliffhanger, so I am now excited for the sequel to come out!

Decently fun ride

Narrator sounds a bit like Thurston Howell. Kinda pompous. The story is fun and imaginative but borrows from many sources.

totally enjoyed

I love Greig becks books I have everyone of them plus the audibles, once again he hit a home run with this book, I wouldn't give anything away but it was a awesome listen or read well I am starting to second book of the story and I am wondering if he is going to do to this story like he did to journey to the center of the earth make it a three book set here's hoping

Dinosaurs, dragons and Vikings Oh my!

A great must read Beck Book!

If you are a fan of the author, then you already know how great the book is!

It’s a slow build up, but once it pulls you in it hooks you! Definitely looking forward to more in the series and from Grieg Beck!

Not my favourite by Greig Beck

I am a huge Greig Beck fan, but I found this book pretty average compared to his previous books. Perhaps it was too slow-paced to my liking, perhaps the storyline was too predictable, or perhaps the characters didn't appeal to me. I am not sure, but it is probably the latter. I am writing this review a week after finishing it, and I can't remember a single character's name. The protagonist was boring, and I hardly got to know him.

The book isn't terrible, though. If you have never read Greig Beck before, you would probably consider it a fun read. However, Greig is a victim of his own success. One has to be mindful, though, that this is book 1 in a new series, and perhaps the story will develop and be more engaging. I will read book 2 when it becomes available, as Greig Beck is currently one of the more entertaining authors.

PS. The narrator, Sean Mangan, was superb as he always is.

Unfortunately, boring…

I had listened to The Siberian Incident by Greig. It was great - 5 stars. This one, not so much. I want to listen to another of his books but am afraid to invest another credit.

Amazing tale

greig beck is a true story teller. Th detail and story are amazing he is the Jules Verne of this generation. His stories always leave you wanting more.

Exciting story

Exciting story line with twists and turns. Excellent development of characters as is typical of all of Beck’s books. Thanks for the research and glimpses into another world . As always, I was mesmerized and had lots of fun!
