Histoire
When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds. The weather didn’t bother her. In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day. But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew and loved, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and found a reason to race.

Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Kara was soon winning a World Championship medal, going to the Olympics, and standing on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. One of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, she was a major face of women’s running for Nike before leaving to shake up the industry with feminist running brand Oiselle and now coaches elite young female runners. Every step of the way, she has seen the way that our sports systems—originally designed by men, for men and boys—fail young women and girls as much as empower them. When “Renaissance runner” (New York Times) Alexi Pappas - Olympic athlete, actress, filmmaker, and writer - was four years old, her mother died by suicide, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, Pappas had big creative dreams, too: She wanted to make movies, write, and act.

A new edition of a sports icon's memoir, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Kathrine Switzer's historic running of the Boston Marathon as the first woman to run. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially run what was then the all-male Boston Marathon, infuriating one of the event's directors who attempted to violently eject her. In one of the most iconic sports moments, Switzer escaped and finished the race. She made history - and is poised to do it again on the 50th anniversary of that initial race, when she will run the 2017 Boston Marathon at age 70.

From his Midwestern childhood hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family, to his early beginnings in running (he hated it), to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, to his world-spanning, record-breaking races, Scott's story shows the power of an iron will and blows apart all the stereotypes of what athletes should eat to fuel optimal performance.

As recently as 1966, women were forbidden to run in the marathon. Professionals - including doctors - believed it was physically impossible and dangerous for women to run more than a mile and a half. But as with many other barriers women have faced over time, we fought our way in. Today, women make up almost half of the marathoning population. Yet most marathon training manuals are written by men. And while these men are experts when it comes to how men can and should train, women need training programs tailored to our bodies....

Description
New York Times Best Seller
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible. Building a mind so strong would take years of effort and discipline, but it would propel Kastor to the pinnacle of running - to American records in every distance from the 5K to the marathon - and to the accomplishment of earning America’s first Olympic medal in the marathon in 20 years.
Let Your Mind Run is a fascinating, intimate look inside the mind of an elite athlete, a remarkable story of achievement, and an insightful primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can give anyone a competitive edge.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“A candid account about the self-doubt that enters the mind of an elite athlete and how positive thinking made [Kastor] a champion both on and off the course.” (Athletes Quarterly)
“Long-distance runner Deena Kastor shows the secret to her success - and as an Olympic medalist and the American female record holder in the marathon, she’s had more than a few - relies less on any inborn talents, but on ‘the power of thought, attitude and perspective.’ Through race day and training anecdotes, she reveals the mental habits anyone can use to unleash their physical and mental potential.” (Furthermore from Equinox, Five Books High Performers Should Read This Month)
“I have been savoring every story, every morsel of motivation and empowerment; [Kastor] is one of my long time running heroes and I never want this one to end!” (Running 'n' Reading)

Exhausting chore of a listen
Maybe I was expecting something different. But the first several hours are just the author narrating narrow losses and her talent suddenly leading her to exceed explore win. Nothing for a casual runner to take away except “be born fast and be amazing right away in college.”
The ratings indicate maybe there’s wisdom later in the book but life is short so I’m not wasting any more time trying to find out.

Deenna’s story is proof of the importance of training the mind just as hard as you train your body, especially if you want to excel . Although anyone can relate to her story and learn some valuable lessons, I think it is a must read for every athlete, either as a lesson or good reminder.

Loved this book!
I love running but also walk many days & I listen to audible books when I walk. I loved this book & hearing Deena talk to herself in her head as she ran and pushed through was wonderful. It made me feel like we all do the same thing, no matter if we are Olympic athletes or not. The mental piece is huge! I felt so encouraged and motivated to move! I found I paid attention to my surroundings even more as she described the beauty around her & I often had an extra bounce in my step! I loved listening to this book! Highly recommend! Maybe if you don’t run, you may not enjoy it as much, but excellent if you are a runner!

I have listened to Deena's book about 5 times so far. After being in a bad accident, I have found it a challenge to keep my mind in the right space during all the recovery, so every few months I will put on Deena's book and get a big dose of positivity! I love how she tells her story, it feels like a friend giving you a boost. What she says is so true, our attitude is everything. I'm so glad that I can keep turning to her book to keep me on a good path. Thank you Deena !!
