Description

The singer, guitarist, and songwriter, best known for his work with Wilco, opens up about his past, his songs, the music, and the people that have inspired him.

Few bands have inspired as much devotion as the Chicago rock band Wilco, and it's thanks, in large part, to the band's singer, songwriter, and guiding light: Jeff Tweedy. But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

Until now. In his long-awaited memoir, Jeff will tell stories about his childhood in Belleville, Illinois; the St. Louis record store, rock clubs, and live-music circuit that sparked his songwriting and performing career; and the Chicago scene that brought it all together. He'll also talk in-depth about his collaborators in Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and more, and write lovingly about his parents; wife, Susie; and sons, Spencer and Sam. Honest, funny, and disarming, Tweedy's memoir will bring listeners inside both his life and his musical process, illuminating his singular genius and sharing his story, voice, and perspective for the first time.

Includes a bonus with a comic strip and song lyrics.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Engaging… Sometimes the most revolutionary thing about music comes down to its ability to transform an individual.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Wildly entertaining… Breathtaking…Unforgettable…Tweedy's music has never shied away from darkness, but he's also never been afraid to celebrate joy. The same is true with this remarkable memoir - it's a wonderful book, alternately sorrowful and triumphant, and it's a gift not just to his fans, but to anyone who cares about American rock music.” (NPR.org)

"The book’s unsparing detail - on everything from his upbringing in drab Belleville, Illinois, to the contentious band dynamics of Wilco and alt-country gods Uncle Tupelo - make this a uniquely raw rock autobiography.” (Rolling Stone)

Magnificent Audiobook by The Great Jeff Tweedy. !!

I loved this audiobook because, I have been a big Wilco fan since the 1st album A.M. was released in 1995. Jeff Tweedy is a great songwriter, and I loved that he narrates this book, which made me listen to it from start to finish. I found his story telling quite captivating, thru all the trials and tribulations ,he has lived up to this point.

Jeff on Tweedy - very hopeful middle American

It would be nice to have more authors reading their own books. Jeff speaks about his own life and with the same wry humor. Man was Jay Farrar on the spectrum. Starting from his humble childhood in rural Belleville, Illinois just east of East St. Louis. The evolution of one important arm of Alt. Country movement (the other being Minnesota's Jayhawks) including Uncle Tupelo splintering to Wilco and Son Volt. This is an easy read and enjoyable if you like Tweedy's music. Nice to see him finding his feet and working through the hard parts of life.

Way better than I thought it would be.

I'm not a hero worshipper and I don't get star struck. But Tweedy's story is lovely and down to Earth and makes him seem like an old friend telling stories about his life before he met you. I mean, if you hate Wilco and Uncle Tupelo, there's no reason for you to listen to this book, but Jeff tells some lovely stories about how he and his music and his family and his life came to be. I rarely listen to books twice but I think I'll listen more attentively to some of Jeff's records and then re-listen to this book. It's that good. I'll go spend one of my credits on his other book now. It's a gooder.

Must read for any Wilco (or music) fan!

Lots of great stories and insight into what went into the Wilco and Uncle Tupelo recordings, and a surprising amount of insight into what Jeff Tweedy was experiencing the whole while.

Laughs and tears. A positive and hopeful autobio.

I laughed a lot and I cried some too. A masterful telling of one's own story. Self deprecation in healthy measure while allowing that he is, in fact, a highly regarded creator. I'm going back to the intro right now.

Candid about failings

I didn’t know what to expect from this book. I am roughly the same age as Jeff. I could easily relate to a lot of what he was saying about his early life experiences. Despite his successes I guess it shows that nobody gets a free pass on suffering. Enjoyable reading.
