Description

A star-crossed YA rom-com that has the charm of Love and Gelato and the magic of Now You See Me

Seventeen-year-old Lia Sawyer is thrilled to get a mysterious invitation from her grandmother to compete in a stage magic contest—even though her parents object. But she’s going to be judged by a bunch of old-school magicians who think that because she’s a girl, her only magical talents lie in wearing sparkly dresses, providing distractions, and getting sawed, crushed, or stretched. And Lia can’t ask her grandmother for help because she’s disappeared, leaving behind only her best magic tricks, a few obscure clues, and an order to stay away from Blackwell boys, the latest generation of a rival magic family. Lia totally plans to follow her grandmother’s rule—until the cute boy she meets on the beach turns out to be Beckett Blackwell, son of the biggest old guard magical family there is.

Witty and romantic, Lia and Beckett’s Abracadabra is a YA rom-com with a magical twist!

A perfectly magical summer read!

Having read (& loved!) the debut from Amy Noelle Parks (The Quantum Weirdness of the Almost Kiss), I was eager to dig into her latest book, and it truly did not disappoint!

I finished Lia & Beckett’s Abracadabra in a single day, and I hated the handful of minutes when I needed to hit pause because I simply didn’t want to walk away from the magnetic energy of Lia & Beckett! Their budding friendship, framed both by long-standing family feuds as well as contemporary competition (in love and of the magical variety), offered many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat even through the final chapter.

Like in her YA debut, Parks presents a mathematically talented lead who refuses to be underestimated, especially when told she “can’t” because she’s a girl. When comparing her to the protagonist in The Quantum Weirdness…, the lead in this book (Lia) feels to be a radically different kind of girl who exists in the world in a wildly different way; this is perhaps reflected in her movement within her family, with her peers, and in her primary love interest, Beckett.

I quite appreciated the author’s rich character development of Lia, Beckett, and the other members of the Mirror Lake community. Throughout, I really felt as if I knew these characters as I truly came to care for them, noting at various points in the story that I felt like a cheerleader for Lia, Beckett, and others.

Overall, I LOVED this book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
