Life Among the Qallunaat is the story of Mini Aodla Freeman’s experiences growing up in the Inuit communities of James Bay and her journey in the 1950s from her home to the strange land and stranger customs of the Qallunaat, those living south of the Arctic. Her extraordinary story, sometimes humourous and sometimes heartbreaking, illustrates an Inuit woman’s movement between worlds and ways of understanding. It also provides a clear-eyed record of the changes that swept through Inuit communities in the 1940s and 1950s.

The author writes very clearly and honestly about growing up in the James Bay area during the 1940s and 50s. She is an astute observer of her daily life and the changes that were occurring to her Inuk community. This book is a treasure and the narration is perfect.

I am so grateful to Mini for writing this book as I learned more about Inuit culture than I have in my entire life. The way she tells her story is delightful, humorous and utterly charming. Every Canadian should listen to this audiobook!

The author reveals, through her beautiful recounting of the past, a culture so connected to the land it’s rhythms and deep self knowledge. How, through her point of view from the Inuit experience, she reveals the strangeness of the dominating European culture and it’s ignorance of the beauty, complexity and humanity for the Inuit society. An absolute beautiful recounting of her experience. Grateful the author could tell her story - incredible.
