Description
“Little and Often is a beautiful memoir of grief, love, the shattered bond between a father and son, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making, and he reminds us of creativity’s power to transform and heal our lives. This is a powerful and deeply moving book. I won’t soon forget it.” (Elizabeth Gilbert)
Trent Preszler thought he was living the life he always wanted, with a job at a winery and a seaside Long Island home, when he was called back to the life he left behind. After years of estrangement, his cancer-stricken father had invited him to South Dakota for Thanksgiving. It would be the last time he saw his father alive.
Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father, who was a cattle rancher, rodeo champion, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands - but maybe that was the point. In his grief, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father, and with that came an epiphany: He would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft, driven only by blind will, he decided to build a wooden canoe, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death.
While Preszler taught himself how to use his father’s tools, he confronted unexpected revelations about his father’s secret history and his own struggle for self-respect. The grueling challenges of boatbuilding tested his limits, but the canoe became his sole consolation. Gradually, Preszler learned what working with his hands offered: a different perspective on life, and the means to change it.
Little and Often is an unflinching account of bereavement and a stirring reflection on the complexities of inheritance. Between his past and his present, and between America’s heartland and its coasts, Preszler shows how one can achieve reconciliation through the healing power of creativity.

So good
This book was great. Not knowing anything of Trents story it was thrilling. It leads along one mans journey of building a boat and reflecting on his life and the lessons he learns throughout from family and friends.

So real and painful. Pain, love and forgiveness
This story if amazing and painful. It was like looking in a mirror and seeing a scar on my face. Remembering how it got there, who put it there and who helped me heal it up. It left me wondering how badly scarred my son might be and if this just gets repeated or might there be a way to stop the hurt.
I’m not a cryer but that tears did come. It was that painful stuff that starts deep in you gut and works it’s way up to your throat and eyes…maybe it was just guilt.
Read this book or listen to it. It is truly inspired.

Unforgettable story!
Everyone should read this man’s story of life, death, relationships, and finding who you are. Full of love, hope, insight and a fair amount of sadness, this goes on my top 5 list. Out of pain comes peace in so many ways.

Beautiful memoir with Universal truths
Beautifully written coming of age story that is about more than coming of age. For anyone who has struggled with relationships with people who couldn’t be who you needed them to be, with finding your place in a new world, with feeling like what you do really matters, or with finding out your parents are imperfect humans just like yourself, you will find moments of your story in these pages. We might not all have grown up in a one-room schoolhouse on the harsh prairie in the 1980s and 90s, or moved to NYC as a young gay man, but Preszler’s memoir is filled with universal truths that can resonate with many. An excellent conversation starter: this book is great to read and discuss with a friend, loved one, or group.
The book is wonderfully written, seamlessly weaving memories with the story being narrated. The memories come in flashbacks, connecting the past with the present.
I normally am left wanting and unimpressed with narrator-read books. However, Matt Bomer delivered on everything that matters: nuance, tone, voices, and a passion for the book and story. It didn’t feel like a narrator, it felt like Preszler telling his own story.

Beautifully written story
I haven't read/heard a book in a long time that is so relatable and well told. I didn't want the book to end. The narrator did a perfect job with the story. Well worth the time spent listening to this, but don't expect to be able to multitask while listening because you won't want to miss any of it.

Phenomenal, must read!
As a full time fine furniture maker I grabbed this book as a fan of craftsmanship and a fan of Trent and his work. I was blown away by the deeply human and reflective story couched in the monumental task of hand crafting a strip canoe. Matt Bomer did a phenomenal job with the read as well, bringing through the emotion of the story.

Captivating Story Telling
I listen to audio format often, this book kept my attention unlike any book I've read in a long time! It was part perfect timing, with my love of woodworking, and my wife recently losing her father whom she had a rough relationship with. This helped me better understand the conflicting emotions she was feeling while keeping me interested in the boat build as well as the story of the authors life. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful story of love and finding oneself
What a beautiful story of Trent’s journey to finding himself and his true passions as well as discovering his father’s love for him. I especially enjoyed reading (hearing the story so well read by Matt Bomer) because my late husband was serving on the ISU Alumni board with Trent at the time some of this was happening in his life. I remember him telling me about this beautiful canoe and how much he enjoyed Trent. He would have loved this book, as did I. And the “little and often” reference was so meaningful by the book’s end. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a meaningful life story.
