Description

There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming.

There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten.

For a long time he lived in the toy cupboard or on the nursery floor, and no one thought very much about him. He was naturally shy, and being only made of velveteen, some of the more expensive toys quite snubbed him.

A Classic

I loved this book when I was younger and was so happy to see Richard Armitage doing a reading. As he read, I could see the pictures in my storybook. A sad story, but a good memory. Great reading, Mr. Armitage has a lovely voice for children's stories.

Perfection

I absolutely adore this rendition of this beautiful and sweet classic 'tail '. This is a story I did not discover until I was an adult but it is so simple and timeless that it suits children of all ages. Additionally, Richard Armitage and his narration and character voicing are unsurpassed. His golden voice is perfect for this ageless story.

Keep the tissues handy!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I had never read this book before. It is wonderful to hear Richard's voice, as he uses it in such a tender way to perform the story. I cried my heart out. As a former Kindergarten teacher, I suggest that parents who have especially sensitive children wait until their child is older to introduce them to this story, as it has passages that might be difficult for them to hear without getting upset. I'm glad I purchased this title.

How to toys become real?

Before Toy Story there was the beloved Velveteen Rabbit.

A wonderful addition to any child’s library. The narration by Armitage is wonderful!

Classic Tale, Expertly Performed

"The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams is one of the best children's stories I have ever read. There is such effortless world-building to how concepts such as "becoming Real" and "nursery magic" are introduced. The storytelling style is detailed and descriptive while also being insular and concise. I think every sentence adds value to the tale.

This is right up there with Winnie-the-Pooh, Toy Story, and Watership Down on my list of warm fuzzy favorites. Though only half an hour long, this story really sticks with me and is as thought-provoking as when I read it as a child. The way the wild rabbits treat the Velveteen Rabbit and the sudden appearance of the Nursery Magic Fairy (whatever happened to the Skin Horse?) aren't the best scenes, but I still look forward to reading this tale to my own kids someday.

And, as always, the Richard Armitage-narrated audiobook version I listened to was performed perfectly.
