Description

Introducing a remarkable new character from number-one New York Times best-selling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat...and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it....

Pretty good listen

The story is 99% about finding a reason for a dead donkey. Interesting scenario given the current state of the world. But I can't figure out why the storyline about Atlee Pine's sister's disappearance has any relevance in the novel. It was the definition a red herring.

Readers spoiled this story

The plot of Long Road to Mercy is okay. It's not brilliant, but it could hold a person's interest. The readers, howver, take an okay story and make it less. The female protagonist comes off as flippant even in the most dangerous, worrisome situations for her character. The female protagonist's love interest comes off as a low-IQ football player. There would appear to be no chemistry possible between the two. The only character who is read well is the female protagonist's sidekick.

Terrible dialogue!

A combination of writing and reading - stilted, unrealistic, annoying. Really got in the way of the story.

Good read

loved the storyline and the characters. a little bit far reaching that they could come up against so much opposition and come out fairly unscathed. But the hero's should win!

Love the new characters

I love the 2 women lead characters in this new series. The plot is a little over the top, but it's very entertaining. The narrators are good, too. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Damn, Baldacci is good!

Great story with outstanding narration! LONG ROAD TO MERCY is the best novel that I have read or listened to this year. FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine is a new David Baldacci character and I suspect this the first novel in the Atlee Pine series. Just get Long Road to Mercy and listen to it. You will not regret it.

Baldacci still has it!!!!

Loved the book! David Baldacci is one of those authors who has not lost his touch. My only question is when will he have time for a forth series? Between Will and John and Amos, he's added Atlee Pine. The man will have to become a speed writer!
If you're a fan of Baldacci you will not be disappointed. I won't elaborate on the publisher's summary or I risk spoiling this book for someone else. I think it's nice that he's decided to make his lethal protagonist a woman as opposed to the just backing up the male protagonist.
Brittany Pressley and Kyf Brewer do an excellent job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS.

Thank You.

DISAPPOINTING! THIS CAN'T BE BALDACCI

Terrible plot/story line. Amateur at best. Unrealistic. The main character and her side kick secretary could have possibilities for humorous crime solving, but this story was all over the place without any in depth cohesiveness. The final big scene was nothing short of impossible. The female narrator was okay. The male narrator was TERRIBLE! He took a highly decorated, black ops ranger and made him sound like Jethro from the farm with a double digit IQ! He was just as bad on every male character. It is all I can do not to return this book on principle of where was Baldacci when this was written?!

Second narrator ruins everything

I wanted to like this book. But someone made the decision to use a second, male narrator to voice only the spoken parts said by male characters. The main narrator is fantastic, but the male narrator is terrible! And there's an awkward pause before and after every utterance by a male character. It's very distracting and ruined the book completely. I could not finish it.

Inane Plot Ruins a Promising New Series

I'm a big Baldacci fan and have listened to and enjoyed the Robie, Puller and Decker series. I was looking forward to a new series from him with a female protagonist. And while I think Atlee Pine has potential, the inane plot she was stuck in for this book just ruined what could have been a great launch to a new series. What I thought was going to be a thriller started off well but then deteriorated into a girls road trip, complete with references to Thelma and Louise, and segued into a hike down into the Grand Canyon that was just too ridiculous to even suspend disbelief. The secondary characters, including the villains, weren't memorable or believable. The narrators were tolerable when listened to at 1.25 speed.

This can't be Baldacci.....

This feels like a story written as a teen thriller, not a Baldacci mystery thriller. There is no way people actually talk like this. Pretty disappointed in this title.

Boring

This is the only Baldacci book that I have struggled to finish. The narration made the male characters all sounded like simpletons and the story had no suspense. There was way too much time spent on the skills of a weight lifter.
