Description

For years, Elizabeth Peirce struggled to put her life back together after a concussion. She searched for stories of real people recovering from head injuries and came up empty. This experience prompted her to write a book that would help others. Interwoven are the stories and voices of other concussion survivors and the health professionals who treat them. Combining five years of research and her own personal experience of this debilitating injury, this book recognizes and honours the mysteries of the brain and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It offers comfort and reassurance through practical suggestions and self-help techniques in language that is accessible to the lay listener. A toolkit of empowering self-care strategies, this book will activate the innate healing potential of a concussion survivor.

Soothing Solidarity for Concussion Survivors

If you have a concussion, you know that each person has their own special, frustrating snowflake of healing to deal with. This book is not an exhaustive resource on medical science or treatments or insurance navigation. This book is like meeting someone in a support group who has been here for a while and really knows how to make you feel less alone. The author has tips and ideas based on her own experience, some great resources and some light science that illuminates without causing overwhelm. But I think the big gift of this book is really the heartfelt honesty about what it is like to navigate life post concussion.

There is one chapter dedicated to food. She acknowledges that food is a controversial subject and that anyone should do a lot of research before doing any kind of restriction - I appreciate that acknowledgement. And I skipped this chapter. If you are healing your relationship with food or disordered eating you don't need to hear more messages about "good" or "bad" foods. That will only add to your stress.

I also really appreciated that she acknowledges the benefits and the dangers of meditation when you are healing your brain! It is important to understand this and be compassionate with ourselves. I have found very few brain healing sources have touched on this complication. Often Meditation is just insisted upon as a crucial part of healing - but for many it is not the answer.

The book is short, and easy to listen to. Her voice is soothing and calm. Her perspective is uplifting and positive without denying the severity of her condition. Somewhere in there she said something like "am I giving my treatments time to take effect?" and that line alone was worth the read.

If you are someone who prides themselves on being productive and tends to want to work hard to accomplish speedy healing...this will be a good listen. We need time. We can't force the healing pace. The harder we try the more difficult we will make it for ourselves.

This is a great listen that I will revisit when I need reminders to slow down and soothe my spirit as I continue to heal.
