 Only the money was real. Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. Bosch got off a shot that struck one of the robbers as their van sped away, but the money was never recovered. And the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

Now Bosch moves full-bore back into that case, determined to find justice for the young woman. Without a badge to open doors and strike fear in the guilty, he learns afresh how brutally indifferent the world can be. But something draws him on, past humiliation and harassment. It's not just that the dead woman had no discernible link to the robbery. Nor is it his sympathy for the cops who took the case over, one of them killed on duty and the other paralyzed by a bullet in the same attack. With every conversation and every thread of evidence, Bosch senses a larger presence, an organization bigger than the movie studios and more ruthless than even the LAPD. The part of Bosch that will never back down finds as fatal an opponent as he's ever encountered - and there's no guarantee that Bosch will survive the showdown ahead.

just saying I really enjoy all Connelly's books. this started slow and I was wondering what was different. it took a bit for me to get used to being in Bosch's as the book is written from his perspective alone. I eventually enjoyed this new format as the book progressed. Overall it came together nicely and the twists and turns became the usual mess that is Harry.

One of Connelly’s best. Reader is the best one yet. One of Bosch’s best stories. Lots of recurring characters and lots of twists and turns. A Bosch classic.

Cariou is the best narrator IMaO, Welliver is a great Bosch in the TV series (chip on his shoulder Ahole) but
Cariou's inflections with character changes worked for me.

Another great one in the Harry Bosch series. It threw me for a loop because it's written in 1st person. I was not expecting that. Until now we've only encountered Harry in 3rd person. It sounds strange in 1st person and although it allowed us some insight into what Harry is feeling, it did not give us insight into his analytical mind as he was solving the case. So, a bit disappointing that way.

In this one, it has been several months since Harry has retired from the LAPD. He's now a Private Investigator and decides to take up the cold case of a murdered production assistant, four years previous. His investigation brings his into contact with other ex-LAPD detectives, the FBI, Homeland Security and his ex-wife, professional poker player Eleanor Wish.

True to form Harry eventually fits together all the pieces that he missed last time around. Harry as a P.I. gets a solid ending. Harry, as a man gets an unexpected ending that should change the tone of all future Harry Bosch books.

The narrator, Len Cariou, was great. The music in between chapters was terrible. 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

Now I'm out of Audible credits so I'll have to listen to a non-Bosch book for the next 3+ weeks.
