Description
In July 1973, Bob Tininenko, his wife Linda, and his brother in-law Jim Fisher set sail from Tacoma, Washington, on a 31-foot trimaran, down the West Coast to Costa Rica. The journey was expected to take a matter of weeks, but 10 days into the cruise, the party encountered a freak storm off the coast of Northern California. When gale-force winds and 50-foot waves capsized their boat, the voyage became a nightmare.
For 72 days, the trio was lost at sea. Challenged by nature and compromised by a bitter rivalry, their courage and will to live was put to the ultimate test. Jim, the owner and skipper of the boat, was a devout fundamentalist whose recognition of God's will in every event brought him into increasing conflict with his brother-in-law. A harrowing testament to man’s survival instinct
A very well written and well narrated true story of survival. Three very important themes were threaded through the telling how 3 persons tried to survive on a capsized upside down sailing vessel on the open Pacific Ocean for just over 2 months. The author explores the relationship between man (Bob Tininenko) & woman ( Bob’s wife Linda); man to man ( Bob T. & Jim Fisher) and man to himself . The reader has an in-depth look at how two men who had quite a similar up bringing & how that up bringing played out into their adult lives. One man (Jim) remained a devout believer in the teachings of the Seventh Day Adventist doctrine. The other man (Bob) who had so many unsatisfactorily answered questions or no answers at all relative to the teachings of the 7th Day Adventist which resulted in his life going in a completely different direction. His direction was devoid of any organized religious doctrine. Definitely recommend the book no matter that this event took place so many years ago. It can be as true today as it was then.
