Before she became the first transgender person to speak at a national political convention in 2016 at the age of 26, Sarah McBride struggled with the decision to come out - not just to her family but to the students of American University, where she was serving as student body president. She’d known she was a girl from her earliest memories, but it wasn’t until the Facebook post announcing her truth went viral that she realized just how much impact her story could have on the country.

Author Kate Bornstein ushers listeners on a funny, fearless, and wonderfully scenic journey across the terrains of gender and identity. On one level, Gender Outlaw details Bornstein's transformation from heterosexual male to lesbian woman, from a one-time IBM salesperson to a playwright and performance artist. But this particular coming-of-age story is also a provocative investigation into our notions of male and female, from a self-described nonbinary transfeminine diesel femme dyke who never stops questioning our cultural assumptions.

Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys’ clothing. They called him a tomboy. That’s what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At 20, he wondered if he was asexual. At 23, he surgically removed his breasts.

Pocket Change Collective is a series of small books with big ideas from today's leading activists and artists. In this installment, Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

One of Billboard's 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time: The provocative transgender advocate and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me! provides a searing account of her search for identity and her true self. It began in a bedroom in Naples, Florida, when a misbehaving punk teenager named Tom Gabel, armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a headful of anarchist politics, landed on a riff. Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse.

Description
National Best Seller
2020 Canada Reads, Longlisted
An inspirational story of accepting and embracing two trans people in a family - a family who shows what's possible when you "lead with love".
All Amanda Jetté Knox ever wanted was to enjoy a stable life. She never knew her biological father, and while her mother and stepfather were loving parents, the situation was sometimes chaotic. At school, she was bullied mercilessly, and at the age of 14, she entered a counselling program for alcohol addiction and was successful.
While still a teenager, she met the love of her life. They were wed at 20, and the first of three children followed shortly. Jetté Knox finally had the stability she craved - or so it seemed. Their middle child struggled with depression and avoided school. The author was unprepared when the child she knew as her son came out as transgender at the age of 11. Shocked, but knowing how important it was to support her daughter, Jetté Knox became an ardent advocate for trans rights.
But the story wasn't over. For many years, the author had coped with her spouse's moodiness, but that chronic unhappiness was taking a toll on their marriage. A little over a year after their child came out, her partner also came out as transgender. Knowing better than most what would lie ahead, Jetté Knox searched for positive examples of marriages surviving transition. When she found no role models, she determined that her family would become one.
The shift was challenging, but slowly the family members noticed that they were becoming happier and more united. Told with remarkable candour and humour, and full of insight into the challenges faced by trans people, Love Lives Here is a beautiful story of transition, frustration, support, acceptance, and, of course, love.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"[A] success both through strong writing and the crackling feeling on the page that she genuinely loves the shit out of her trans family." (Xtra)
"This sweet and positive account of a family facing obstacles and growing closer together is inspiring." (Publishers Weekly)
"Love Lives Here is an emotionally raw, often funny book that leaves the reader wanting to be Amanda Jetté Knox’s best friend. It’s the story of how people tried to push her down, and will strike a chord with anyone who’s ever been bullied. And that’s a lot of us!" (Ottawa Sun)

A CisPerspectove
Amanda Ketté Knox gives refreshing perspectives on transgender narratives: the one of a parent worried for her trans child, the one a spouse worried for her trans wife and the one of a woman who have to figure where she lies in between all the expectations she has to face. With objectivity, she answers questions in a truthful way, while also educating people on the limits concerning one's curiosity.
By learning about Alexis' coming out story, we learn that there are multiple ways to understand our gender and that not every trans person will know from a toddler or very young child age like Zoë. And that it is okay. With Love Lives Here, you get to understand why being authentic with yourself is the key to unlock loving relationships.
Take the time read/listen to this powerful, loving biography. Thank you for opening the eyes and minds of others, Amanda.

A deeply moving portrait of a family in transition
A must for anyone who knows a trans person, or wants to learn about them. Amanda is a marvellous storyteller; both in the written word, and now as a narrator. As a trans person myself, I feel she captured the emotions, the struggles, the hopes, and fears of the transition to living as our true selves.
She pulls no punches in the telling, even when they paint her in an unfavourable light. Her candour is, and the emotional way that she presents her family's life and transition is wonderfully refreshing.
You will laugh with her, cry with her, and hopefully empathise with her and her family. This is what allyship looks like. It's not always perfect. It's not always pretty. But it's honest, and she and her family exemplify her motto.
Lead With Love. We should all try to do more of that.

Exceptional & Enlightening
Jetté Knox has written a proudly authentic and deeply moving memoir allowing us as readers to really get to know each of her family members in an intimate and real way. She speaks candidly about how they arrived at the present moment, with all the twists and turns that reflect the reality of life: nothing is a straight path (pun intentional).
For those of us who have lived similar journeys, you will find much identification. For those just beginning to learn about how gender really exists as a lived experience or are looking for a model on how to be a strong ally to GNC/NB and trans folk, this will definitely offer you a good place to start.
I wish that everyone could read this book - I believe that it would relieve so much of the ignorance that drives the fear and bigotry that produces.
Glad and grateful for authors like this who are willing to do the exceptionally courageous work of sharing their stories in this way.

Beautiful and powerful
This story is neat and dear to my heart. I’m in a similar situation, and Amanda’s storytelling has helped me immensely. The story of her family gives me hope. This is one of the best books I’ve listened to in many years.

So uplifting, and beautiful
I absolutely adored this story. Myself someone realizing later in life that I've always been a girl on the inside, hearing Zoeys side of the story as well was indescribable.
