Madly, Deeply is a rare invitation into the mind of Alan Rickman—one of the most magnetic, beloved performers of our time.
From his breakout role in Die Hard to his outstanding, multifaceted performances in the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and more, Alan Rickman cemented his legacy as a world-class actor. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice, and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate audiences today.
But Rickman’s ability to breathe life into projects wasn't confined to just his performances. As you'll find, Rickman's diaries detail the extraordinary and the ordinary, flitting between worldly and witty and gossipy, while remaining utterly candid throughout. He takes us inside his home, on trips with friends across the globe, and on the sets of films and plays ranging from Sense and Sensibility, to Noël Coward's Private Lives, to the final film he directed, A Little Chaos.
Running from 1993 to his death in 2016, the diaries provide singular insight into Rickman's public and private life. Reading them is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close companion. Meet Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveler, the fan, the director, the enthusiast; in short, the man beyond the icon.
Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton.

Hmmm…

I don’t believe it’s possible to walk away from his diaries with the sense that now we ‘know’ Alan Rickman. There isn’t enough there. It’s clear from a few notes he made that these diaries weren’t meant to hold all his secrets. They are records of activities and some of his thoughts. As I listened, I found myself wondering if I would have liked this man - the actual person beyond the roles. I think this is a sign of what the diaries, for all their brevity, are able to reveal. I certainly have walked away with a deeper appreciation of him as a serious actor who both gave and demanded respect when it was due; and as a human being who sometimes struggled, frequently celebrated, and lived life to the full.
Watching (or re-watching) some of his films since listening to the diaries adds an element of appreciation and illumination thanks to bits of the backstory that he shared in his entries.
I would recommend this book with the caveat that, as I suspect with Alan Rickman in life, you have to embrace what he offers so genuinely in exactly the way he’s offering it, not the way you might have wanted it to be.
Ah unexpected view

It's basically read directly from his diaries. Which were in point form. I found this theory interesting. For at 1st I thought it was a bit odd and wasn't sure if I would be able to get through the whole book. But as you kept listening and certain names popped up that you recognized I was hooked. The detail he put in that point form was at times hilarious. Especially when he was at the theater. It may have been a great performance but you had somebody coughing and a weird laugh that would just wreck the entire night. It's very neat to see it in a different way.
He definitely had a busy lthe busy life. from movies to the theater and traveling everywhere. I definitely will be looking to watch a couple of his other movies I have not seen before.
If you are a fan of his. I definitely recommend reading or listening to the book.
very interesting

I think I was hoping for more then a couple of lines per gage. When it said diary I was thinking more then then just what, who and where on a given day
June flight to LA. Ok….. then what happened. ? Thoughts, feelings, observations?
I feel like if it could have been read by Alan himself I feel like there could have been more… well just more then “ may 27, stayed in, cooked dinner and watch television.
However the PDF excerpts were a real gem, Alan was a very talented artist. I feel like owning the hard copy, albeit just pages of singular lines and ironic musings the pages themselves would definitely please the eyes.
As saddened by the passing of the gentleman that he was, I hope as I progress through the diary pages that there will be more actual story.
Insightful, yet not

The voice is SO UNLIKE Alan Rickman’s that it’s easy to forget whose diary this is.
Literally just a reading of a diary.

The structure of the book was so short and choppy that I abandoned it a few times. I just couldn’t get into a groove with it. I kept thinking that this must be my shortcoming and tried again. Then I realized that there was a PDF and once I saw his detailed illustrations, the narration of his thoughts began to come to life for me. The beauty and intricacies of these pages reveal much about the heart and soul of this actor.
The best of books always seem to feel like someone walking along beside of me, coaching me, pushing me to question myself and the world. Alan Rickman’s journal certainly did this for me.
Thank you for sharing his thoughts and vulnerabilities and helping me to explore my own. Lovely book, just lovely.
Delightfully not a celebrity ‘tell all’
