This is one of the most underrated pieces of literature of this category. MP, side characters and the universe' progression are impeccable, and the emotional investment this book series makes you put into it is 100% worth it. Each book is a genre defining masterpiece, and each time you reread/listen, you will find new things to relate to and learn from. the ending is so wild and conceptually creative that none can guess or foresee it despite hidden foreshadowings etc, just amazing... 3rd time re reading the series....

I liked the 3 books equally. The power system and progression was neat, the plot was novel and interesting, and the characters were fun if just a little bland.

But something about it made me give a 4 star. I think it's a combination of things I can't point out besides gut feeling but there are two points that I didn't enjoy.

The first was that I feel like we're implicitly told by the narrator/side-characters that MC is a badass rather than shown through events. Now, I can come up with a bunch of example scenes that'd counter this point but the part I got this feeling from is MC's military nickname, "The Machine". That's too flattering to have come from a band of military combatants organically. Any nickname from a group of soldiers/Mercs would be a jab at a sore spot or mocking one so whenever "The Machine" was used to refer to MC I'd cringe since it'd feel like a kid's attempt at a badass soldier call sign.

The other thing that I didn't like about the story was that the female characters felt too shallow. Like a menwritingwomen meme without the oversexualization.

It's still a good story I'd recommend to specific friends.
