Description

“Illuminating.”—The Washington Post * “Candid and relatable.”—Time *“Riveting and personal.”—Mindy Kaling * “Captivatingly immediate.”—The Skimm *

A “poignant, frank, and intimate” (The New York Times) memoir by actress Constance Wu about family, love, sex, shame, trauma, and how she found her voice.

Growing up in the friendly suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, Constance Wu was often scolded for having big feelings or strong reactions. “Good girls don’t make scenes,” people warned her. And while she spent most of her childhood suppressing her bold, emotional nature, she found an early outlet in community theater—it was the one place where big feelings were okay—were good, even. Acting became her refuge, and eventually her vocation. At eighteen she moved to New York, where she’d spend the next ten years of her life auditioning, waiting tables, and struggling to make rent before her two big breaks: the TV sitcom Fresh Off the Boat and the hit film Crazy Rich Asians.

Here Constance shares private memories of childhood, young love and heartbreak, sexual assault and harassment, and how she “made it” in Hollywood. Raw, relatable, and enthralling, Making a Scene is an intimate portrait of the pressures and pleasures of existing in today’s world.

Extraordinary perspective with which I can relate

Constance Wu is great at describing her life and decisions. Rather than tropes, she describes her parents as they were and not by stereotypes. as someone who was brought up by an incredibly accomplished, but non-tiger mom, I am glad she describes someone like my mom.. so many aspects of the book resonated, I will be recommending to many incl. my 2 adult children and a niece currently in Taiwan.

I was expecting more

Although I enjoyed the pace and her narration but for some reasons her story doesn't resonate with me and dare I say she came across as a bit unlikable.

Heartfelt and real

Loved this. It felt very real and honest. Wished there was more about her sisters.

Making a seen

I like this book because it’s a great insight into what we can not see.

Surprising

I’ve always liked Constance and when she fell off the map I wondered what had happened. It was nice to hear from her perspective of how things were happening. I dislike all the jumping around from different stages of her life. I feel like it would of been better chronological. I wish to hear more of her experience with Crazy Rich Asians. She did come off as someone who isn’t exactly emotionally mature. Still have respect as you are growing and everyone takes fame in differently.

Hope that you write another book later on.
