À propos de cet audio
Nat Cassidy’s highly commercial debut horror novel, Mary, blends Midsommar with elements of American Psycho and a pinch of I'll Be Gone in the Dark.
Mary is a quiet middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself.
But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things.
Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying mutilated specters that come with increasing regularity; she begins auto-writing strange thoughts and phrases, and her investigations reveal that these experiences are echoes of an infamous serial killer.
Then the killings begin again.
Mary’s definitely going to find herself.

This was wildly horrific and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Mary is invisible. At least, she seems to be to the people around her. An unassuming woman at the end of her 40's, she is struggling to deal with hot flashes, body aches, and the overall side effects of going through perimenopause. But something else is changing too; she seems to lose chunks of time, she discovers she's auto-writing things she doesn't remember, she hears voices guiding her through her days, and most of all she can't look in the mirror without fainting. When she loses her job in NYC, she is forced to move back to her hometown to care for her ailing aunt. On her journey to find herself, she ends up discovering much more than she bargained for.
On the surface this book is a riveting psychological horror story, but underneath it's so much more than that. Touching on themes such as ageism, femininity, patriarchal ideals, and (peri)menopause. I was surprised to learn the author is a man, but his foreword and afterword explains why, despite that, this book is such an accurate depiction of life as a middle aged woman.
I'm honestly glad I didn't read the whole synopsis of this one before diving in, because it surprised me at every turn. For me to enjoy an unreliable narrator, it needs to be done expertly and this book did just that. It was twisty, dark, and balls-to-the-wall weird, but in the best way. I highly recommend the audiobook as the narrator does an excellent job of bringing the story to life.
This story won't be for everyone, but it was exactly what I was looking for. If you're looking for a horrific psychological read, this is the one.
Wild in the best way
