Bastard’s Eve is a night of celebration for most residents in the canal city of Lodi - but not for sorcerer Learned Penric and his Temple demon Desdemona, who find themselves caught up in the affairs of a shiplost madman, a dangerous ascendant demon, and a very unexpected saint of the fifth god.

This novella falls between Penric’s Fox and Penric’s Mission in the internal chronology of the Penric & Desdemona tales.

Penric is encouraged to turn away from his books to enjoy the Bastard's Eve festivities, but was also to check in on a suffering young man at a local hospital.

There Penric finds a terrified murderous demon infested man who fled from Desdemona. The rest of the novella is the adventurous night tracking down the maddened young man.

Not sure why I did not enjoy this as much as the other novellas, I suspect as was listened to out of order (it is before Penric's Mission), or why I felt it was uneven. However, I hope Penric bumps into the Sainted Choi again.

Having read the story when it was released on kindle, the story was already somewhat familiar, but with the depth of Bujold's writing there are always new things to discover.
This is more recent in published order than in chronological order, but another delicious bite of the world of Penric and Desdemona
Wonderful narration again from Grover Gardner.
This will certainly be another one I will enjoy listening to repeatedly.
