The correspondence between Carrie Allsop and David Mayer reveals, piece by piece, the painful details of a devastating affair between their spouses. With each commiserating scratch of the pen, they confess their fears and bare their souls. They share the bewilderment over how things went so wrong and come to wonder where to go from here. Told entirely through the letters of two comforting strangers and those of two illicit lovers, Evidence of the Affair explores the complex nature of the heart. And ultimately, for one woman, how liberating it can be when it’s broken.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Description
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.
At the age of 29, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.
Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?
In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?
Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

Good concept
I am a huge fan of Taylor, and the concept was interesting, but the character development was weak. Gabby needed more depth, everything surrounded Hannah making Gabby another token ‘best friend’ trope. Personal pet peeve of mine is when a characters race is only accounted for when they are a POC, it is a form of othering.

Love TJR older work
Have you ever wondered if you were living your life in an alternating universe as well as the one you are in now? Maybe in Another Life examines this idea using two alternating plotlines and parallel timelines.
Hannah Martin is at a crossroads in her life, a place she is not happy with the directions it is going in. Having just ended an affair with a married man she has decided to move from NYC back to her hometown of LA. She has temporarily moved in with her very close and best friend Gabby and her husband Mark. To celebrate the three of them meet up at a local club with old friends including Hannah ex-boyfriend Ethan. At the end of the celebration Hannah is presented with a choice .. go home with Gabby and Mark or stay at the club with Ethan.
In alternating chapters Reid explores Hannah’s life as she lives in each life path, looking for that perfect thing to make her happy and her fulfill her life. While on this alternating life journey Hannah will make the same career choices and come across the same people yet her life outcome will be different with Gabby as the only constant in her life than does not change .. no matter which path Hannah is following.
Author Taylor Jenkins Reid based this idea on her love for the movie Sliding Doors. Unlike Sliding Doors Reid wanted this story to explore that there could be different decisions that lead you to different places and that maybe there really is not one person that is your soulmate. Maybe in Another Life is an examination on faith, choices, soulmates and that there are many ways that we can be happy.
This is my fourth Taylor Jenkins Reid, the first two were for me quite a disappointment that I was about to shelf Reid as an author. Maybe in Another Life and One True Loves made me fall in love with this author’s writing.
This was an audiobook narrated by none other than Julian Whelan - I just love how she bring a story to life and draws you in.

Interesting but not my fave from this author
Interesting that some of the reviews call this book boring. I actually thought it was quite the “page turner” - I was dying to know if the two story lines converged in the end. I thought the book was thought provoking but not my favourite from TJR, perhaps because it wasn’t as dishy as her previous books. I’d also love to see TJR come up with a totally original story. I think the “homages” to existing works (whether real life, like Fleetwood Mac and Elizabeth Taylor or fictional, like Sliding Doors) is getting a little tired.
