Description

Stan is in prison, convicted of a crime he swears he didn’t commit and desperate to prove his innocence. And girlfriend Billie is determined to help him. Kelly, his victim, is struggling to cope after a horrific ordeal that left her traumatised and lonely. For Billie, who has her own secrets and demons in her past, enlisting a private detective to look for vital evidence that might set Stan free is a way out of this nightmare.

Billie has complete faith in Stan, but when she hears Kelly’s version of events, cracks begin to appear and her faith wavers. There are two sides to every story and Billie needs to get to the truth, but the deeper she digs, more lies are unearthed. Who will she believe? And who is really telling the truth?

Strains Credulity.. But Also Somehow Realistic

The sheer audacity of the lies, secrets, and hidden motives (not to mention the *number* of them) in this Patricia Dixon offering is staggering. If any of the pathologically deceptive individuals in this story were in your orbit (friends/family), you would be justified in fleeing from them at the first opportunity. There is little doubt that people like this exist.. but Dixon relies on morally-horrible "zebras" to drive her plot.
Fortunately, she has a good grasp of the "rubberneck" proclivities of her readers - trusting that they will guiltily keep watching the trainwreck.. and writes well enough to make setting aside reservations surprisingly easy. While unspectacular, the author's prose/vocabulary is capable, her dialogue is true-to-life, and her pacing/foreshadowing is commendable. The book is hard to swallow but quite readable.

As to presentaton: reader Emma Powell - backed up by creditable technical support from Whole Story QUEST Audio/W.F.Howes sound engineers - turns in a "respectable" performance. Her diction, voice-acting, tone, and evident interest are impressive.. but her timbre & cadence aren't as enjoyable to me as another reader could have provided. The casting of the project is solidly "adequate".

Altogether, '#MeToo' merits a reasonable 7/10-stars. I feel fortunate to have gotten it as a 'Plus' option - it was an entertaining distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons - but you should strongly consider spending your Credit on something else if they ask for one.

[Incidentally: Dixon's description of nailbiting considerations while living in prison feels incredibly authentic - among the best that I have ever read. Well done!]
