Description

From the creators of the New York Times bestselling series Campfire Stories: Close Calls comes a new original audiobook that brings to life the bold, hair-raising, and often tragic adventures of a generation of eighteenth-century frontiersmen: the Long Hunters.

Steven Rinella (The MeatEater Podcast) and Clay Newcomb (MeatEater's Bear Grease podcast) gather listeners for a new round of stories, this time drawing from the lives of the rugged Long Hunters, who include such figures as Daniel Boone, Henry Skaggs, and Kasper Mansker. These were the commercial hunters and trappers who explored and exploited the First Far West, the land across the Appalachian Mountains, in the era between the Seven Years War and the American Revolution—one of the most fabled periods of American history.

The feats of these courageous, resilient backwoodsmen forever shaped a national identity centered around individualism, capitalism, freedom, and the need for wild places and wild animals.

Near Extinction births Conservation

I am smarter after this story…I asked myself why I would be awaiting, for a month, to have a fuller understanding of the period of history between 1761-1775…?

I tried to explain and rationalize this excitement to my very sensible best friend… she was also equally baffled. I concluded to her I believed that I prefer literature that doesn’t trouble me emotionally or leave me feeling overly invoked.

In advance to the release, I had also pondered the authors gravitation to this period of history… I believe the ambitions of the authors had been achieved…. to my surprise, I was left disturbed, horrified, sickened and enlightened on the mentality of the long hunters.

I often had visions of heading off into the wilderness to work a trap line … Horrified at the possibility I could descend into madness, I have since decided to have a change of heart listening to the story of darkness.

In conclusion, it shines the light on conservation and the necessity of strengthening its importance, a familiar theme in the works of Steven Rinella.

A very detailed account of an era that would be hard to contemplate for most.

The readers did a great job giving life to the stories, and the detail was far greater than that of any books I have read of this era in the past.

"Daniel Boone Biography"

Mainly a Daniel Boone biography. The most fascinating chapter was on what happened with the deer skins once they reached England. Some interesting and hard to find details about the supplies the long hunters used as well. All in all worth a listen but I was hoping for more details and history beyond the stories of Daniel Boone and was hoping to get pulled into the story a bit more but it was a good listen. I found the Bear Grease podcasts on Daniel Boone more interesting and vibrant. In the end I am happy I purchased the book if it leads to more market hunter subjects being researched but was disappointed with the level of original research, beyond what was had already been on the podcasts this company produces.

Not just a flash in the pan

Amazing sound track, story, and clear audio. Hard to beat meat eaters audiobooks. Steve and clay are the perfect people to talk about this subject and you can tell by the excitement in their voices.
Also if meat eater reads this we need a picture of Boones knife on Steve’s instagram page.

Well worth the time to listen.

There guys do a really good job telling a carefully researched story that you can tell, they care deeply about. The way they trade off as they go really holds off any dullness that can sometimes creep in when a sole orator has the job all to themselves.
This recording could have had me listen from start to finish in one sitting if life could let me. I’ll never be in their company to shake their hands so I figured one more positive review would suffice.

Written to be audible and therefore not good. Poorly read.

It’s funny that Steve Rinella often tells how he cannot stand the job done by the person who did the audible reading of his first book… I think I would rather have that guy read this than Steve! His intonation is horrible.
