À propos de cet audio

Now experience where the hit movie from Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon Ho, starring Robert Pattinson, started in Mickey7 (the inspiration for the film Mickey 17).

Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.

Mickey Barnes is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

On a routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, his fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties, and there can only be one Expendable. If Mickey7 reports his survival to Command, one of them is going into the recycler. If he doesn’t and they’re caught, they both are.

Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.

That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"The audio narration for Marshall was fantastic–very ‘Full Metal Jacket drill Sgt.’"—FanFi Addict

"Narrated by John Pirhalla and Katharine Chin, the story was brilliantly performed and the personalities of the characters came through in the voicework."—The Bibliosanctum

"Mickey7 is a unique blend of thought-provoking sci-fi concepts, farcical relationship drama and exotic body horror. Edward Ashton keeps it all grounded via a protagonist who experiences the wonders of interstellar travel and alien contact while literally having the worst job in the universe. The result is alternately amusing, intriguing and horrifying, with each chapter seeming to engage a different part of your brain."—Jason Pargin, New York Times bestselling author

The audio was actually pretty entertaining and enjoyable. The story I found boring and predictable. Sorry, not my cup of tea perhaps.

Narrator great - story not crazy

This book has a really unique and captivative story! I am looking forward to the 2nd part!

Great book! Looking forward for part 2!

light enough to listen whilst doing mundane activities yet deep enough to keep my intrigued. The performance was good, but it always feels weird when the male narrator does a woman's voice.

If you like sci-fi stories like Ready player one and/or Children of time, I think you'll enjoy this title.

Very fun story!

I really enjoyed this book. The main story progressed well, with flashbacks peppered throughout nicely explaining the backstory for the characters, and the society. Great character development too.

An easy listen, and very well written

Mickey7 Review

Everything I needed in a sci fi story for a long road trip. Can’t wait to read Antimatter Blues.

Loved it!

The premise is great but the book is plagued with very little action, tons of internal dialogue and history, improbable storyline and one dimensional characters. A missed opportunity on an interesting concept. Narration was great. I regret using a credit on this book.

Meh

I enjoyed Mickey7 as a casual yet thought-provoking listen. The story leans more into character development and philosophical dilemmas, particularly the question of identity through cloning, rather than fast-paced action or explosive sci-fi tropes.

Mickey’s internal struggle around who he is (or isn’t) is the heart of the book, and I appreciated that the surrounding cast received just enough attention to support that theme without taking focus away.

The narration by John Pirhalla and Katharine Chin was solid, nothing groundbreaking, but clear and consistent enough to carry the story well.

I’d recommend this audiobook for those who enjoy grounded sci-fi with existential themes. It’s great for a relaxed listen during your day, though I don’t feel especially compelled to continue the series to find out more about Mickey Barnes.

A thoughtful Sci-Fi with a touch of existential grit

No spoilers here: The concept is interesting, but immortality it’s not. When Barns dies, he dies, and a facsimile (clone) is made. Anyway, this is the worst type of audiobook. It’s good enough to make you think that something good is going to happen, but the story moved as fast as cold molasses. Way too much time spent on the feelings of an expendable, and not enough time spent on moving the story forward.

It’s a trap
