At the heart of a bizarre planet lay the goal of every being that had ever lived.…
Below average in height and unprepossessing in appearance, Nathan Brazil is an unassuming if cynical starship owner, carrying passengers and cargo for a living - hardly the sort of person to hold the fate of the entire universe in his hands.
But when Nathan detours from his route to answer a distress call, a hidden stargate hurls him and his passengers to the Well World, the master control planet for the cosmos. Billions of years ago, a godlike race unlocked all the secrets of space and time and remade the universe according to their grand design. Then they vanished and left behind the Well World to maintain the pattern of the universe.
Now someone is searching for the planet’s hidden control room - the Well of Souls - to seize control of the cosmos. Nathan must stop them, but this planet causes bizarre metamorphoses in visitors, changing them into centaurs, mermaids, and giant insects seemingly at random. As a result, Nathan no longer recognizes his friends, let alone his unknown enemies. His task seems hopeless - until his long-suppressed memories begin to return and he realizes who he really is.

a wonderfully strange story with a good narrator.
could not put this one down. not the best story I've ever heard but a very interesting and compelling Sci fi world and cast.
lots of interesting characters of different races, good character growth for some of the mains. There are some adult concepts and sexual overtones but not to awkward imo.
the narrator was likely what had kept me hooked. A wonderfully deep voice with nice cadence. he shifts his tone and tenor to describe different characters. mostly to good effect but 1 or 2 annoying ones, but that's typical for that style of narration.
it's free on audible so there's really nothing to complain about in my mind. satisfied.

Good story, boring narrator
Very good, interesting story but the narrator has a very monotone, emotionless voice that really makes it hard to get into. Probably would be a much more exciting story otherwise

A story that stands up over time.
I enjoyed this book. The tech and ideas are ahead of their time early fitting into currently new book. I did not know it was originally written in 1977.
Love finding gems like this one. Give it a try.

Decent story, but terrible narration!
I enjoyed the book.
However, it was almost ruined by the narrator. His bland monotone style makes the story feel juvenile, if that makes sense…

A unique story
I am very glad to be able to listen to this old favourite. In many ways it was ahead of its time with its exploration of different social structures and gender roles in different intelligent alien species.

Terrible narrator
I hate leaving bad reviews and it could be because of the terrible narration (monotone with very little inflection) but I found the story also quite disjointed. Just couldn’t get into it.
