Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

How many self-help books are written by authors whose biggest success is selling self-help books? Three Simple Steps is different. Despite stock market crashes, dot-com busts, and the specter of recession, the author started a virtual company from home, using a few thousand dollars of his savings. A few years later, without ever hiring an employee or leaving his home office, he sold it for more than $100 million. As the economy slipped into another free fall, he did this again with a company in a different field. He accomplished this through no particular genius.

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our “two minds” - the rational and the emotional - and how they together shape our destiny. Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being.

Description
Minimalism is the thing that gets us past the things that clutter our lives so we can make room for life's most important things - which actually aren't things at all.
At age 30, best friends Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus walked away from their six-figure corporate careers, jettisoned most of their material possessions, and started focusing on what's truly important. In their debut book, Joshua and Ryan, authors of the popular website TheMinimalists.com, explore their troubled pasts and descent into depression. Though they had achieved the American Dream, they worked ridiculous hours, wastefully spent money, and lived paycheck to paycheck. Instead of discovering their passions, they pacified themselves with ephemeral indulgences, which only led to more debt, depression, and discontent.
After a pair of life-changing events, Joshua and Ryan discovered minimalism, allowing them to eliminate their excess material things so they could focus on life's most important things: health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution.

Had some highs, had some lows
I went into this audiobook with high hopes, as an avid Minimalists reader, watcher, recent podcast follower, and even Bag buyer (the Pakt One is amazing). This audiobook disappointed me unfortunately. I think it was largely the audiobook format actually, and this content may have been better consumed by eyes instead of ears. While I think Ryan and Josh voice a lot of their enthusiasm and passion, the audiobook narration was monotone and at a singular pace, which made it tough to get through. Content-wise, I think there were a couple of chapters that should have been skipped, specifically the health and diet part - as it's the classic problem of telling people what fad to try to do something about their health via anecdotal evidence (something we should strive to get away from). Overall, this book felt like it dealt more with life philosophies rather than a guide or blueprint to minimalism. #Audible1

Terrible narrator.
The narrator sounds like the most boring individual ever. OMG. If hipsters could be described by a voice, this would be hipster voice 101. Monotone, with a terrible accent. It is very hard to engage, with the material, when the narrator is sapping your will to live. The book lost me when they started on the gluten free / vegan / vegetarian / paleo rant.

Misleading title
The title is absolutely misleading! This book is about focusing on leading a more meaningful life and gives guidelines on nutrition, workout, relationships, finding your passion, contributing positively to the world, etc...There is basically very little about minimalism itself. It could still be a great read if the advice were not so basic. I am pretty sure anyone who has read a few self-help books isn't going to learn much from this.

Should be titled: 5 values to live a meaningful life. I got this book thinking it would be about the philosophy and practical implementation of living with fewer things, what to get rid of, what to keep etc, there was none of this, instead it read like a life coaching book.

Tight version of stuff you can learn on podcast
As with their other books, you probably don’t need it as the podcast covers the same material. But this is a tightly organized version of their message. I think it has a lot of value that other minimalism books miss because it focuses on the why. Why do you want to live a minimalist life? Just getting rid of your stuff doesn’t help because you'll just replace it, as happened to me after reading the Tidying Up books. This shows you the value of living a more deliberate life and the things you can improve (health, relationships. passions, growth, contributions to the world) with the extra time and money you'll have. Nothing stellar, just nuts and bolts. It was useful to me. Grade: A-
Excellent narration. I’m used to their voices from the podcast but Justin Malik is so good that I hear their voices in him now.

Let’s see, we get some subjective advice about nutrition, water consumption, relationships, etc. Whatever seems to randomly interest them. Don’t wait around for the topic of minimalism though, maybe they’ve moved on to life coaching & forgot to tell us.

Good Content, Dismal Narration
I love The Minimalists, and this is a good summary of their core principles. What lets it down is the monotone narration by someone who seems utterly bored by what he is reading; how I wish Ryan or/and Joshua had read it instead

The book says virtually nothing about minimalism. Instead, the authors present a litany of half baked pop ideas about how to live a happy life. What a complete waste of time!
