Histoire
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

Description
The endgame is at hand for Penn Cage, his family, and the enemies bent on destroying them in this revelatory volume in the epic trilogy set in modern-day Natchez, Mississippi - Greg Iles' epic tale of love and honor, hatred and revenge that explores how the sins of the past continue to haunt the present.
Shattered by grief and dreaming of vengeance, Penn Cage sees his family and his world collapsing around him. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised, and his father, once a paragon of the community that Penn leads as mayor, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction. Despite Penn's experience as a prosecutor in major murder trials, his father has frozen him out of the trial preparations - preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth of the crime to his son.
During 40 years practicing medicine, Tom Cage made himself the most respected and beloved physician in Natchez, Mississippi. But this revered Southern figure has secrets known only to himself and a handful of others. Among them, Tom has a second son, the product of a 1960s affair with his devoted African American nurse, Viola Turner. It is Viola who has been murdered, and her bitter son - Penn's half brother - who sets in motion the murder case against his father. The resulting investigation exhumes dangerous ghosts from Mississippi's violent past. In some way that Penn cannot fathom, Viola Turner was a nexus point between his father and the Double Eagles, a savage splinter cell of the KKK. More troubling still, the long-buried secrets shared by Dr. Cage and the former Klansmen may hold the key to the most devastating assassinations of the 1960s. The surviving Double Eagles will stop at nothing to keep their past crimes buried, and with the help of some of the most influential men in the state, they seek to ensure that Dr. Cage either takes the fall for them or takes his secrets to an early grave.
Tom Cage's murder trial sets a terrible clock in motion, and unless Penn can pierce the veil of the past and exonerate his father, his family will be destroyed. Unable to trust anyone around him - not even his own mother - Penn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a famous young Black author who has come to Natchez to write about his father's case. Together Penn and Serenity - a former soldier - battle to crack the Double Eagles and discover the secret history of the Cage family and the South itself, a desperate move that risks the only thing they have left to gamble: their lives.
Mississippi Blood is the enthralling conclusion to a breathtaking trilogy seven years in the making - one that has kept listeners on the edges of their seats.

Epic & surprising ending
I listened to the trilogy one after another and couldn't "put it down". It was an exciting tragic story with more than a little truth in it. I highly recommend it!!

Best Audible book ever.
This is without a doubt the best Audible experience I have ever enjoyed. Greg Iles is a superb author and the writing is exquisite in this convoluted, fascinating and very suspenseful story. Even after 27 plus hours I was sore to reach the end. Scott Brick gets better all the time and really outdid himself in this performance.

Great for a sedative
This has been one of the most protracted books I have ever listened to, with so much unnecessary filler and a ridiculously silly storyline. I have read one or two of Greg Iles books before but this one was a waste of a credit. And to add to the long, tedious, boring story is Scott Bricks horrible over breathy narration.

Thank Heaven it's finally over
For the longest time during the interminable hours and hours of listening to this trilogy, I could not decide if it was a perceptive, penetrating look at life in racially divided Mississippi over the generations or a turgid hard-to-believe melodrama. By the end of the tortuously long Mississippi Blood, the verdict is decisively the latter. Oh, how many times did I silently plead please let this be over.
The material Greg Iles mines in this trilogy may be rich but he pounds any sort of meaning out of it with his unbelievable plot lines. The saintly doctor, war hero and colour-blind healer to all souls in the community, turns out to be just another guy who cheats on his wife. The octogenarian redneck domestic terrorist has almost super-human powers despite his age. And so on and so on.
Yes, thank heaven it's finally over.
