À propos de cet audio
Imbued with superhuman power, a young woman becomes the ultimate weapon, in this post-apocalyptic cyberpunk series from the bestselling author of Death: Genesis.
Ninety years ago, Earth was consumed—and irrevocably transformed—by a cloud of alien nanites known as the Mist, bestowing humanity with uncanny abilities and enhancing technology far beyond early twenty-first century science. But these advancements came at a high price: Billions are dead. The planet has been overrun by vicious monsters. And alien overlords await the opportunity to swoop in and exploit what remains of Earth and its people for all their worth.
Mirabelle Braddock was born into this much-changed world. In the megacity of Nova, built above the flooded ruins of New Orleans, she lives a privileged, though isolated, life as the niece of Jeremiah Braddock. Jeremiah survived the onset of the Mist to become one of the planet's most dangerous men, and he intends to use his hard-earned power to accomplish a single goal: train Mira to withstand Earth's imminent Integration into the larger galaxy.
Soon, the alien factions waiting in the wings will descend and strip the planet bare, leaving little more than a wasteland. To ensure Mira's survival, Jeremiah has given her a unique Tier 7 Nexus Implant, granting her abilities heretofore unseen. Further augmented with cybernetics and an arsenal of advanced weaponry, Mira has the potential to become the most powerful being on Earth—and possibly even save the world from its seemingly inevitable destruction.
The first volume of the hit cyberpunk LitRPG series—with more than 500,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!
©2023 Nicholas Searcy (P)2023 Podium AudioThe writing is sharp, well-paced, and easy to stay engaged with, and the world-building feels natural without ever bogging the story down. The plot kept pulling me forward, and by the end I didn’t want it to stop — which is always the best sign for a series starter.
Soneela Nankani’s narration deserves special praise. The performance is confident, immersive, and perfectly matched to the tone of the story. She elevates the material without distracting from it, which makes this a great listen whether you’re fully focused or listening while working.
If you enjoy smart sci-fi with momentum, strong characters, and narration that truly enhances the experience, this is absolutely worth your time. I’ll be continuing the series without hesitation.
Not sure why I stopped — now it’s a favorite

The vocabulary/prose is capable, the description is vivid, and the game mechanics are innovative (the "Mistrunner" skill tree - focused on hacking opponents' neural networks - is unique).
Unfortunately, Searcy takes a full ⅓ of the book until Mira enters the nanite-driven "Mist" reality and periodically leaves the game to train for the Alien return in the dystopian real world (alternately burning with guilt over possibly harming innocents & coldly torturing children for information). Both the schizophrenic MC and the staccato pacing were ungainly.
As to presentation: I cannot fault reader Soneela Nankani for any of the deficiencies in the novel. She delivers a genuinely outstanding interpretation - although setting playback speed at 1.15X improved the delivery. This is a great listening experience.
Altogether, 'Mistrunner: A Cyberpunk LitRPG' is quite original but would benefit from an aggressive editor. This 7.5/10-star effort could have been competed in half the length without missing anything. If you can get the recording off of the 'Plus' menu, don't hesitate.. but if they ask for a Credit, save it for something else.
[Note: the frequent loooong Character Sheet reviews - endlessly updating stats - demonstrate why the audiobook format is insufficient for this genre. If you feel that poring over XP buys and the results of skill-grinding are essential to enjoying this type of story, stick to a text version]
