À propos de cet audio

The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

What a spectacular audiobook. Rachel is a wonderful and deeply complex character. Through her, we learn about Hawaiian history and the little known story of Kalaupapa. I enjoyed the narrator's performance tremendously, and the mix of Hawaiian and Japanese words used at the appropriate moments greatly enriched the experience. 5 stars all around.

Historical fiction at its best

The story and performance was good, however as someone who likes to switch between the book and audiobook I found this frustrating. The audiobook chapters are not the same as the book, I don't really understand why but it made something that should be seemless unnecessarily annoying.

One annoying thing....

My ancestors were born on Molokai. Listening to this audio book and the narration, I felt I was there in-person and could see what was described, the people, the places, the feelings. Beautiful story, as I even had my grandpa mentioned as one of the characters in the book who was alive and real. Thank you so much Alan Brennert for writing this sad and troubling time for my people with such heart and care for their souls.

This book was an educational yet emotional fic-history tale. I read it while on holidays in Hawaii and appreciated learning about some of the very real and very hard past of the local people. It was an epic tale that left me questioning what hardship and family really are. Highly recommend!

Breathtaking

This book was selected by my book club and is by far my favourite selection of the year. The story was engaging and enlightening. It will stay with me for a long time. The narration was excellent.
