Description

The Marines know one thing: it will be the largest battle in the history of the Corps. Can they stop the Terracotta Army?

In capitals across Europe, protestors decry the atrocities, while hypersonic glide bombs devastate the civilian centers, industrial hubs, and the most critical pieces of infrastructure. A new reality has begun to take hold in people’s minds. The end is coming.

The nightly news doesn’t help.

The war in the Russian Far East has ground to a halt. US and Japanese Marines battle for control of the Yaeyama Islands. With spring around the corner, the fear is that China has one last gambit to play, and people are wondering if NATO and Russia are ready.

The Allies have 750,000 soldiers and the US Eighth Army is planning wholesale destruction through China.

But time isn’t on their side. The fate of the free world rests on two fronts: the battlefields and the political minefield back home. The analysts know that Jade Dragon still has a few tricks waiting. They’re just not sure they can defeat them. The survival of the allied nations hangs in the balance.

Another terrific near-future military thriller

The authors deliver another terrific near future WWIII story. As per the norm, here are the things Rosone and Watson excel at:

1) They write a truly epic story that weaves several narratives into one tight literary bow.
2) Their battle scenes are realistic and harrowing. Whether you’re in the cockpit or trudging through the jungle, it’s like you’re there.
3) Logistics – I know this is something James takes pride in. They get into the nitty-gritty of how to run a war. This heightens the realism of the story and for people who like broad-scope war novels, the detail is like cat nip for me (but don’t worry, it’s not too much – just enough);
4) International perspectives. This is perhaps my fav element of the Monroe Doctrine. It’s not just about the Americans. In every book, they’ve told the story from the perspective of various allied nations. In this book, it’s the Aussies get their turn and it’s extremely well done. The use of the Royal Australian Regiment, walking through the various involved ships, and etc. If you’re Australian, you would have been just thrilled by these sections of the book. I certainly was as a Canadian. As I listened to Monroe Doctrine, Book 6, this element was heightened by the excellent narration by Marc Vietor.

All in all, it was another riveting, well-written, realistic military thriller and like the others that came before, I highly recommend it.
