Description

TWO BESTSELLING MYSTERIES IN ONE GREAT PACKAGE!

THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE

The Murder at the Vicarage is Agatha Christie’s first mystery to feature the beloved investigator Miss Marple—as a dead body in a clergyman’s study proves to the indomitable sleuth that no place, holy or otherwise, is a sanctuary from homicide.

Miss Marple encounters a compelling murder mystery in the sleepy little village of St. Mary Mead, where under the seemingly peaceful exterior of an English country village lurks intrigue, guilt, deception and death.

Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing land-owner is the most detested man in the village. Everyone—even in the vicar—wishes he were dead. And very soon he is—shot in the head in the vicar's own study. Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues that will lead to the unmasking of the killer.

THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES

Hercule Poirot solves his first case in the Agatha Christie novel that started it all, now in a fully restored edition that features a “missing chapter” along with commentary from Christie expert John Curran.

Who poisoned the wealthy Emily Inglethorp and how did the murderer penetrate and escape from her locked bedroom? Suspects abound in the quaint village of Styles St. Mary—from the heiress's fawning new husband to her two stepsons, her volatile housekeeper, and a pretty nurse who works in a hospital dispensary.

With impeccable timing, and making his unforgettable debut, the brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is on the case.

Murder at the vicarage

I would like the original version of this story as read by Joan Hickson back. It was the version that I bought as Joan Hickson was my favourite Miss Marple. Mr. Grant is no substitute for the original.

thumbs down for vicarage thumbs up for styles

I did not like the narration by Joan Hickson, the first couple chapters I found her to be very mumbly yet I pushed on and it did get better, but she doesn't differentiate her voice for different characters so I got confused in some parts. I don't care for the miss Marple story, I don't find she added depth to the story and didn't understand her role except being the nosey neighbor that solves the crime, it just wasn't catching for me.

I like Hercule poirot and Hugh Fraser and enjoyed this book much more. it kept you guessing and I easily got connected with the characters.

Agatha Christie the true Queen of Suspense!!!

Amazing introduction to two of the literary world’s greatest sleuths. Engrossing performances and nail biting finally.

Classic

Two of Agatha Christie's classic stories keep you on the edge of you seat with plenty of twists and turns. This is a great bundle for anyone who is just starting into Agatha Christie's works as these are the first books introducing Poirot and Miss Marple. Hugh Fraser is brilliant as always - one of my favourite narrators. Joan Hickson is great, especially for Miss Marple, but considering The Murder At The Vicarage is told first person by the Vicar, it can sound a bit disconnected. This bundle is a great deal for one credit! I wish there were more like it. (I have downloaded all of the Agatha Christie Bundles now.) #Audible1

Classic!

Hickson reads charmingly; though her style might not suit all listeners, it suited me to hear the definitive Miss Marple read the first Muss Marple mystery.

Hugh Fraser is a fantastic narrator whom I would pay to hear read absolutely anything. He brings a book alive.

Narrator makes all the difference

I'm not a great reader, but I certainly enjoy a good mystery. I find Agatha Christie's stories are slow to start but hooks you as you progress, and you can always expect an exciting finish.

That said, I'm also not a great listener. I tune out easily so I need extra effort to focus, and unfortunately, Ms Joan Hickson's narration just did not do it for me. AC's stories often have lots of back and forth dialogues, and unless you are following closely, you can get lost easily if the narrator doesn't take the effort to enunciate the different characters, however minor the characterization might be. Ms Hickson's reading style, while classy, is rather flat, and makes it really difficult to follow - sometimes words sound gobbled or slurred and makes it extra hard to make out the words. I had to drop Vicarage a few chapters in (even after a few retries) because I find that I had no idea what's going on.

Mr Hugh Fraser, however, does an excellent job in enunciation. His narration is crisp and clear, and his characterizations have a great balancing of letting you understand who is speaking while not being wildly wacky or growl-ly. After a few chapters I find myself helplessly hooked onto Styles waiting to unravel the mystery. This is my second book read by Mr Fraser, and so far he is my favorite narrator (over Mr Dan Steven, sorry) because I am continually engaged by the performance. In the future I will be looking to purchase other titles read by him.

Two performances and two very different reviews

The narrator of the first book, Vicarage, was far too stiff for me to listen to. Tried but couldn’t manage to understand her. The second book, Styles, was well done and enjoyable.

Really hard to listen to

I love these stories, but just because you're an actor, doesn't mean you can read an audiobook. Joan Hickson was an amazing Miss Marple, but I was only able to stand short bursts of her on the story and that ruined the listening. I wish it wasn't so, but it is.
