Lately, though, Paislee feels as if her life is unraveling. She's been served an eviction notice, and her estranged and homeless grandfather has just been brought to her door by a disconcertingly handsome detective named Mack Zeffer. As if all that wasn't enough, Paislee discovers a young woman who she recently rehired to help in the shop dead in her flat, possibly from an overdose of her heart medicine. But as details of the death and the woman's life begin to raise suspicions for Detective Zeffer, it's Paislee who must untangle a murderous yarn....

A regional story like this one rests on the capabilities of the narrator, and Beverley A Crick is full-on perfect. I love her accent and the delightful lilt of her voice, and how she keeps moving the story along at a good pace. Traci Hall has written a wonderful first book to launch the Scottish Shire Mystery series. This cozy mystery is full of twists and turns leading from one suspect to another, laced with a potential romance with the town's new disconcertingly handsome detective named Mack Zeffer waiting to flower. The story begins the morning police deliver Paislee's estranged grandfather to Cashmere Crush, her wool shop, after they've found him sleeping rough in the park. When, despite her better judgement, she invites him into her and 10-year-old son Brody's home, his arrival brings a new shape to their little family. His assimilation brings warmth to the story, as does Paislee's impressive ability to care and to forgive in all areas of her life. The ending had me on the edge of my seat, and was as as unexpected as it was righteous.

First read by this author. I enjoyed an original main character and the development of other characters. I can see this developing into a serious as the characters are varied and interesting. The context of a single mom who runs a knitting shop made for a cozy backdrop.

3.5 stars rounded up. Nice cozy mystery with good characters. Yarn, cute kid, cranky grandpa, adorable dog - what more do you want? The narration was lacking in my view, although I did get used to it as I got lost in the story. The writing could have been a bit stronger in a couple of spots. I will likely check out book #2.

Well drawn Scottish setting with lovely relatable characters. The heroine is more believable than most cozy mystery stories. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Excellent mystery story

I thought this book was a cozy mystery and maybe it is, but it dragged and was too boring for me.. I stopped around an hour and a 1/2, maybe 2 hours in, because, though the victim was discovered. The story just kept going on and on about the single mom and her troubles.

I found it very funny that the MC didn't want to be judged or for her son to be judged, but she herself was judgmental and full of excuses! Ask any single mom about the "hard schedule" of the mom in this book, and they would tell you that this mom has no reason for her child to be late to school every day. Are you kidding me?

I didn't understand the entire incident with the headmaster at the beginning of the book Or what it had to do with the story line. It felt like the author was just creating angst and drama for no reason, instead of just getting on with the story.

Originally, I thought the main lead was going to be the person discovering the body and being inquisitive enough to solve the crime.
But this lady, is more a follower of the status quo.
For goodness sakes, she finds out that her uncle is missing and she doesn't blink an eye so I couldn't see how later on she was going to then become this very inquisitive person to solve this mystery.

this was a cute story but it was a shame that the narrator was English and putting on a terrible Scottish accent. It sounded a bit Irish, English and Indian but not Scottish at all.

It also was very clear that this was written by an American author as there were many phrases that would never be used in Scotland, like a pharmacy, graduating from high school, euros (they use pounds in scootland for currency), sweater and so many more. Also the pronunciation of Hamish was incorrect and it was really hard to listen to. I was going to give up but I wanted to know how the story ended.

I really wanted to love this and listen to the next ones in the series but this just put me off.
