Description

It is the spring of 1923 and the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple is on her way to a stately home in Scotland to research her next article for Town and Country. On board the Flying Scotsman, the famous London-to-Edinburgh train, Daisy meets an old schoolfellow, Anne Bretton. Anne, along with all of her relatives, is en route to visit the deathbed of the family scion and notorious miser, Alistair McGowan. As it currently stands, Alistair's will leaves the entire family fortune to his brother Albert, and the rest of the family is rushing to his side, each hoping to convince him to change his will in their favor.

Daisy, meanwhile, has her hands full taking care of Detective Inspector Alec Fletcher's young daughter Belinda, who ran away from home and stowed away aboard the train. She barely has time to take notice of the intricate family feud taking place all around her - that is, until Albert McGowan is found murdered on the train and Daisy is surrounded by an entire family of suspects.

A bit too sweet…

Less enjoyable than previous episodes as the overt explanations of feelings was sickly sentimental at times.
The narrator struggled to hold on to distinct accents and some were quite weak.
I’ll be back but I need a break from the 1920s.

loved it

Loved the story . Great humor throughout. Didn't think it too sentimental at all. I've become quite attached to these characters.

Disappointing narration

I really enjoy these Daisy Dalrymple mysteries but this one was spoiled by poor narration. The characters are supposed to be British but pronounce common words as if they were American. Common British places are also mispronounced (Berwick on Tweed is pronounced Berrick but the Narrator pronounces it phonecicallly) No Brit would pronounce deuce as doose. It’s horribly distracting. The books deserve better.

New Narrator

The first 3 books had a great narrator. The narrator for this book is someone else.
I found the narration to be distracting. The accents for the Scots characters were appalling. Daisy sounded snootty. The inspector sounded like a comedic character.
I did make it to the end of the book. It was another charming mystery. The relationship between Daisy and the DI moves forward
I would recommend reading this one yourself.

Good book, terrible narration

I really adore Daisy Dalrymple and her cozy mysteries. However, this book (4th in the series) saw a new narrator who clearly is not British and has no idea how to do accents. Do they not audition narrators for audiobooks? It seems not because her accents were a mixture of English, Scottish, American North and American South, with a sorry attempt at Welsh. it really distracts from the story. If I didn't like the first three books I would have returned it and never listened to any more books in the series. Good thing it was the 4th in the series and I had already become a fan.

Great story but….

I do wish that the narrator had at least researched some of the names and places for pronunciation and had also worked on the accents. If I hadn’t enjoyed the storyline so much, I would have stopped listening; every other word seemed to grate.

Terrible accents are distracting

This was quite hard to listen to because of the performer's inconsistent voices and accents. a character would go from what sounded like almost Irish, to almost Scottish to an almost Southern (American) accent in one sentence. The story was hard to follow as I kept getting pulled out of it by wondering what was going on with the speech.

Lovely story, couldn’t get past the bad accents

I love Carola Dunn’s stories but won’t be listening to any more with Mia Chiaramonte. The attempt at accents (couldn’t tell if it was southern, Scottish or Australian at times) often distracted me from the enjoyment of the book.
