One of the most buzzed-about debuts in years

An international sensation sold in 24 territories and counting

Exploring the psychological dynamics of the relationship between a precocious yet naïve teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, a brilliant, all-consuming listen that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer.

2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, 15-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful 42-year-old English teacher.

2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student, who reaches out to Vanessa, and now Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible choice: Remain silent, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship, or redefine herself and the events of her past. But how can Vanessa reject her first love, the man who fundamentally transformed her and has been a persistent presence in her life? Is it possible that the man she loved as a teenager - and who professed to worship only her - may be far different from what she has always believed?

Alternating between Vanessa’s present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Thought-provoking and impossible to put down, this is a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions that raises vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. Written with the haunting intimacy of The Girls and the creeping intensity of Room, My Dark Vanessa is an era-defining novel that brilliantly captures and reflects the shifting cultural mores transforming our relationships and society itself.

Includes a bonus conversation with Kate Elizabeth Russell, Grace Gummer, and Jessica Williams (editor of My Dark Vanessa).

Horrifying and Brave

My Dark Vanessa recounts the story of Vanessa, a lonely 15-year -old girl who is groomed to engage in a sexual relationship with her English teacher. The story is told in two narratives which alternate between Vanessa’s adolescence and adulthood. The interchange of these accounts allows the reader to understand the calculated manipulation of sexual grooming while exploring the long-term psychological consequences of abuse. In both narratives, the main character contemplates society’s own ephebophilia (“sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents”) which normalizes the sexual objectification of teens in contemporary pop culture. My Dark Vanessa was, at times, a very difficult book to listen to. There were times when my skin was crawling, my stomach was nauseated, and my mouth was locked in a grimace. During some chapters I had to stop listening because I was so angry, or upset, or revolted. My Dark Vanessa sometimes felt horrific, but the novel is so brave and well constructed that it is impossible to award My Dark Vanessa anything less than five stars. Narrator Grace Gummer (whom I later discovered is Meryl Streep’s daughter) gives an excellent performance, though I think the act of listening held me an unwilling captive to sections that I might otherwise have skimmed or skipped.

Challenging listen, but highly recommended

Dark Vanessa is an uncomfortable, challenging listen that takes the listener into the shoes of a woman who was abused as a child and the consequences of the abuse. Grace did an incredible job narrating the character's voices.

TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual abuse, pedophilia, and coercion.

I need a shower

Just listening to this book made me feel skeezy... I guess I am more sensitive to predatory relationships than I realized . The writing was decent, the author captures the naivety of a first "love" fairly well. I don't think I would recommend this book and I only finished it because I'd paid for it...

Haunting

This book was beautifully written, confusing, horrific to read at times. It's haunting me. It is so complex, so conflicting. Just brilliant. I'm going to buy it in print so I can lend it to people in order to discuss and unpack. So thought provoking.

Would recommend 100% though may be too hard for some.

Wow

Was told it was a lot but I didn't expect it to make me question my life interactions with men growing up. The author did an amazing job with this novel it's not for everyone if you have traumas I'd avoid this novel unless you know you can handle the theme in it since it doesn't hold back.

Twistedly deep

I found this a tough but good listen. It is worth it, you can really feel and relate to the character if you’ve ever gone through something similar. Grace does an absolute outstanding job at narrating.

Absolutely Brilliant

Profound and captivating. I found it intense. So many of the scenes and the descriptions of even the smallest actions instantly seemed inappropriate, and yet, it took me to reach adulthood to realize some of my own experiences were just as inappropriate. In fact, it took me until this novel - to hear those scenes play out - to realize how wrong so many moments in my own life have been.
I love how accurately the author really highlights the way that we all explain away moments in life that we can feel are wrong. We know something is wrong, whether in the moment or shortly afterwards, and the idea that we have all been complicit at times is an important piece. As well as the continuing of a romantic relationship or fixation after an assault has occurred, without trying to exhaustingly dissect the 'why'.
I also think that using the perspective of someone who does not want to come forward was important. To grant that story - the actual story we never hear about - to be told in a safe (fictional) environment.

I don't think I'll ever be able to say enough about this novel, honestly.
