First published in 1907, My Life as an Indian is the memoir of James Willard Schultz and tells the story of his first year living with the Pikuni tribe in Montana. It includes accounts of religious customs and ceremonies, hunting, raids, food preparation, child-rearing and more, and is thus of great interest to anthropologists and students of Native American history.

This book is a valuable look into the Blackfeet and larger Blackfoot Confederacy recent history and culture as well as a minor reserved glimpse into a love story. However, I must admit that the reader’s performance was so utterly weak that it distracts to the point that listening to this book is almost untenable. I toughed through it by putting the book on a 1.5 times speed. His lack of research into pronunciations of local indigenous nation’s names was appalling along with the mispronouncing of local landmarks, rivers, mountains and local historical names. In addition, the word is pronounced “ask,” not “aks.”
Tough to get through, but for me, my interest caused me to listen to the entire book.
