What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters?In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry. Once the dust settles, these four find themselves faced with an impossible choice: pretend to be adventurers undertaking a task of near-certain death or see their town and loved ones destroyed. Armed only with salvaged equipment, second-hand knowledge, and a secret that could get them killed, it will take all manner of miracles if they hope to pull off their charade. And even if they succeed, the deadliest part of their journey may well be what awaits them at its end.

Great book, lots of funny, gripping and emotional moments packed in this short adventure.

If you like the premise this book holds: "Npcs" being the main character instead of players, I think you'll love the path the author seems to have chosen for this series. I've been looking for something like this for years now.

Easily makes it within the top 10 greatest books I've had the pleasure of reading( I know listing but that sounds weird ).

The book only scratches the surface of the universe created by the author and I look forward to discovering more of it's wonder in the next book.

Short but gold! A must buy for fans of the genre.

Good story that hooks you quickly but I found the series got better and better as the characters developed throughout the series. In this book they do stay relatively one dimensional. But overall a great story. #Audible1

Drew Hayes take on the classic table top RPG’r and how the lives of the NPCs who have to live with them is fun and an original twist on 4th wall breaking RPG stories. With a lot of gentle fun poking at gamers and a tip of the hat to the original henchman Nodwick. Clearly written by someone who loves games and gamers.

Roger Wayne’s performance is excellent.

An Excellent story, funnier for the gamer but no less excellent for the non-gamer. The story is fun and well written. The narration is exactly just right. Keeps you wanting to hear more. I will listen to it again, just for the sheer pleasure, it's that good!

Loved the story. it is well written and humourous with wit that any table top roleplayer will chuckle over. Roger Wayne is the perfect narrator for this series.
