Description

Once there were great magicians born to the Maghuin Dhonn, the folk of the Brown Bear, the oldest tribe in Alba. But generations ago, the greatest of them all broke a sacred oath sworn in the name of all his people. Now, only small gifts remain to them. Through her lineage, Moirin possesses such gifts---the ability to summon the twilight and conceal herself, and the skill to coax plants to grow.

Moirin has a secret, too. From childhood onward, she senses the presence of unfamiliar gods in her life: the bright lady and the man with a seedling cupped in his palm. Raised in the wilderness by her reclusive mother, it isn't until she comes of age that Moirin learns how illustrious, if mixed, her heritage is. The great-granddaughter of Alais the Wise, child of the Maghuin Donn, and a cousin of the Cruarch of Alba, Moirin learns her father was a D'Angeline priest dedicated to serving Naamah, goddess of desire. After Moirin undergoes the rites of adulthood, she finds divine acceptance...on the condition that she fulfill an unknown destiny that lies somewhere beyond the ocean. Or perhaps oceans. Beyond Terre d'Ange where she finds her father, in the far reaches of distant Ch'in, Moirin's skills are a true gift when facing the vengeful plans of an ambitious mage, a noble warrior princess desperate to save her father's throne, and the spirit of a celestial dragon.

Delightful and new, yet familiar.

I'll admit, I had my reservations about delving into this third trilogy in the amazing alt-earth fantasy world of Jacqueline Carey's creation. Having fallen in love with tragically flawed and yet heroic characters of Phedre, Jocelyn, Imriel and Sidonie, it was going to be difficult to be catapulted many years into the future long after their rule. But when introduced to the lovable and naive Moirin, who is expertly narrated by Anne Flosnik with a gentle Scottish lilt, you are instantly transported back to the magical lands again and fully immersed in Morin's exploits.

Naamah, the faithful companion of the god Elua makes her presence known to Moirin in the form of her gift of pleasure. This time, however, the familiar d'Angeline goddess has chosen a child born of the bear witches, the Maghuin Donn, and who carries the spirit of the Great Bear within herself. These two spirits mingled within give Moirin incredible gifts which she must learn to use and not abuse. This first book of the trilogy allows us to follow Moirin from a childhood of freedom and isolation in the woods of Alba to a young adult, traveling to far off lands.

In a delightful and unabashed manner, Moirin narrates her trek, outlining the triumphs and mistakes and, of course, love. After all, she is touched by Naamah and burns with the desire that touch brings...but it leads to some terrible decisions that she must face. In the spirit of a Jacqueline Carey narrative, this story takes you from the smallest of caves to the grandest of lands. The adventure contained within is breathtaking and unique but rings of a familiar feel so that you know you are still in the same amazing world woven by Carey. You will not be disappointed, I promise you.
