There are various factors that contribute to it and may lead to the development of this disorder in any individual. It can be genetic or develop due to various experiences the individual has gone through. Psychological factors contribute to it in a major way. The causes of NPD are a complex matter, just like the causes of any other mental health disorders.
It is linked to:
- The environment: usually, parent-child relationships that are not healthy.
- Genetics: inherited characteristics. Abnormalities in genes can cause symptoms of NPD.
- Neurobiology: link between the brain with a person's thought process and behavior. When there is an abnormality in this connection, then it can cause issues.
At a certain point, most psychologists assumed that the main cause of narcissism were parents who failed to provide their children with the right kind of love and attention. However, now they know that it is much more complex than that, and there are many other possible reasons for it.
