My first Ken Follet novel was a winner! The narrator could alter her voice to make the characters come to life. I was captivated from the beginning and enjoyed the thrill.

It’s not you’re regular Follett. Most of the stuff that happens in the first half of the book is pretty much superfluous to the entire story and gets dropped towards the end of the book. I don’t get the point of it. It was this side story that couldn’t really follow through to the end of the book because it had zero to do with the 2nd half. Because of that it was just ok for me. I was hoping for so much more.

I’m a big fan of Ken Follett. I have to say this was probably not the best book of his has but I still enjoyed it. I think he wants to make a point about how fragile our world is. I think we all know that. Especially these days. I wish there was some hope at the end of the book.

A learning experience for me. Like other stories about nuclear war, it delves into the horrors that could happen.

Follette’s characters are like people I could know and I felt the feelings of most of them.

I think that the negative reviews come from people who bought this thinking it was a traditional Ken Follett epic. It is not. I found the story compelling and interesting but it certainly isn't the normal Ken Follett.

Narration très bonne. Des femmes partout dans des positions de pouvoir, et elles n'ont que des qualités. Et si elles réussissent, ce n'est qu'en manœuvrant pour échapper aux machinations de leurs supérieurs mâles qui essaient constamment de s'arroger le crédit de leur travail exemplaire. Un thème qui revient sans cesse, et ça devient irritant à la fin. L'auteur fait même remarquer par le jeune chinois qui entre dans la pièce où est réuni qqch comme le comité central du parti communiste qu'il est désolant qu'il n'y ait que des hommes d'un certain âge dans ce groupe. Le lecteur lève les yeux au ciel en voyant le jupon féministe de l'auteur dépasser encore une fois. Je n'ai rien contre les femmes en position de pouvoir, mais le procédé pour faire passer le message manque totalement de subtilité.

J'ai trouvé le périple africain long et pas très utile dans une histoire où, me semble-t-il, l'intérêt est plutôt centré sur les évènements menant à une guerre nucléaire. Il est intéressant de voir la mécanique de la prise de décision dans les divers États impliqués, mais j'ai trouvé que plusieurs décisions graves sont prises bien rapidement.

This one of Follets novels is definitely an easy read although the subject matter is quite disturbing and only too relevant. I found the story line a little simplistic. I am not privy to the workings of the White House but doubt these decisions are made as quickly and without multiple attempts at diplomacy .. but who knows .. today unfortunately maybe people are more linear in there thinking and that is what Follet wanted to portray.

Hoping that is not the case. Still love reading his books!
