Description

The first book in a new series from New York Times best-selling author M A Comley, who has sold over two and a half million books worldwide.

He stands in the shadows. Watching them. DI Sara Ramsey's life is about to change forever. Recently moved to the area and in charge of a new team, she's tasked with finding a serial killer terrorising a rural community. Crimes as heinous as this rarely happen in picturesque rural idylls.

The community is living in fear, desperate for Sara to keep them safe. When the killer changes his MO and abducts a vulnerable resident, Sara realises she is in a race against time to prevent the killer from claiming yet another victim.

Straightforward Procedural

Despite attempts to humanize them, M.A. Comley's characters (including her protagonist: weirdly secretive transfer from Liverpool 'Detective Inspector Sara Ramsey') are uncomplicated.. two-dimensional, really. Fortunately, the crime in this story is similarly unchallenging. A lowlife in deep with loansharks is invading homes & killing bank-averse elderly couples in order to collect enough money to pay off his debts. At one home, he encounters an adult daughter with Down's Syndrome that reminds him of his sister and abducts her instead of killing her.
DI Ramsey and her team conduct witness interviews, collect forensics, and appeal to the public in a cookie-cutter "catch-the-bad-guy" narrative.
Comley's vocabulary/prose is capable, her dialogue is true-to-life (if a bit on the vulgar side), and her pacing is adequate.. but the plot lacks twists & and turns, and the mystery elements required to reinvigorate interest while reading the book are missing.

Reader Sarah Cullum contributes to my "acceptable" assessment of the audiobook with a hit & miss performance, too. Cullum's diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are praiseworthy - but her voice-acting is occasionally subpar, and she reads faaaar too slowly (set playback speed at 1.25X for a more natural experience).

In toto, 'No Right To Kill' is a 5.5/10-star recording. As a 'Plus' selection, it was a reasonable download.. but paying a Credit for it would be debatable (better options for your money exist).

Just Not For Me

It was okay but I can’t look past the things that essentially ruined it for me. All of the elderly characters have the same personality (aside from a drunk brother character), and they lack any originality. They all say the same words to describe their feelings and situations. Dialogue is a little cringey and phoney. Conversations were also repetitive. And my favorite character was the cat, Misty.
