À propos de cet audio
When the dangerous men who killed her husband in a political assassination threaten Ara, Duchess of Burghly, the Crown assigns her a bodyguard. But the man charged with protecting her is no stranger.
He’s Clayton Ludlow, the bastard son of a duke and the first man she ever loved. Eight years after he took her innocence and ruthlessly abandoned her, he’s back in her drawing room and her life.
This time, she’s older, wiser, and stronger. She will resist him at any cost and make him pay for the past.
She’s the only woman Clay ever loved and the one he hates above all others. When Ara brutally betrayed and deceived him, leaving him with a scarred face and a bitter heart, he devoted himself to earning his reputation as one of the Crown’s most feared agents.
He wants nothing more than to finish his assignment so that he can remove all traces of her from his life forever. But walking away from her for good won’t be as easy as he thinks.
As secrets are revealed and danger threatens Ara, Clay discovers that the truth is far more complicated than deceit. Once she’s back in his arms where she belongs, he’ll wage the biggest fight of all to keep her there.

I wish I could count the number of times the words “the only woman he had ever loved” appeared in this book. Too many! After the first three times we got it, and yet we were subjected to the words another five or so times. There were other phrases that became repetitive as well. I bet it would have knocked an hour off of this 10 hours and 45 minute book just by reducing redundancies like that. I enjoyed the story but I was irritated by the author’s apparent assumption that we readers/listeners have a short attention span.
The male protagonist was a big guy. Huge, even. Muscular. Handsome. Throughout the book the female character mentioned his hot body many times over. It got to the point that I wondered if she happened to notice anything else about him, like whether he was intelligent, funny, or generous. We kind of skimmed over his personality in favour of admiring his body.
Having said all that, I have to be fair and say that the overall story was somewhat interesting. Some danger and intrigue, steamy sex, a gentle-hearted mother for a change.
The reader did an excellent job, which was probably one of the book’s saving graces. She handled the various voices and accents impressively.
I think what was missing from the whole experience was fun. No one had any fun, and there was no side character to provide comedic relief, either.
I’ve been listening to a lot of books in this genre lately and am ready for a break, so my review may be negatively influenced by my own tiredness. If that’s the case, I hope someone who loved it will speak up and contradict my opinions.
